THE KEY IN THE PUDDLE / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8 - The Key Beneath the Refrigerator)

By the time Margaret reached the house, the front door was unlocked.

That alone terrified her.

She entered.

"Sophie?"

No answer.

Then Emma screamed.

Margaret ran.

The kitchen scene unfolded exactly as the memory would later return to her in fragments.

Steam.

Eric.

Emma.

The pot.

Vanessa blocking the doorway.

The tiny foot touching boiling soup.

Margaret shouting.

Vanessa insulting her.

Margaret forcing her way through.

Emma coming free.

The pot flying.

Eric falling.

Sophie rushing into the room.

The key sliding from beneath the refrigerator.

Only later would Sophie understand why it had been there.

Eric had hidden it when he heard Margaret enter.

He had shoved it beneath the appliance with his shoe, believing nobody had seen.

The soup spilling across the floor had carried it back out.

Now Sophie held the key.

Eric lunged.

Margaret blocked him.

"Go."

Sophie ran.

Vanessa grabbed her from behind.

Sophie twisted free.

The key nearly slipped from her hand.

Eric shoved past Margaret.

Margaret stumbled against the counter but kept Emma protected.

"Sophie!"

Her daughter reached the basement door.

She unlocked the deadbolt.

Eric caught up.

He grabbed Sophie's shoulder.

Margaret screamed.

"Let her go!"

Sophie drove her elbow backward.

Eric grunted.

She tore free and ran downstairs.

Margaret followed with Emma.

Vanessa came behind them.

Four people entered the basement.

One baby cried between them.

Sophie reached the panel beneath the stairs.

Her hand shook so violently she could barely guide the key into the lock.

Eric stopped halfway down the stairs.

"Sophie."

She turned.

His voice was suddenly soft.

"Don't."

Margaret heard something different in it.

Fear.

Sophie turned the key.

Click.

Vanessa whispered.

"Oh God."

Eric spun toward his sister.

"Shut up."

Sophie pulled the door open.

Cold white light spilled from inside.

The hidden space was larger than Margaret expected.

Metal shelves lined the walls.

A desk stood in one corner.

Two filing cabinets.

Three plastic storage bins.

A small safe.

A laptop.

A document scanner.

A locked medication box.

And an entire wall covered with folders.

Names were written across them.

Rebecca Marsh.

Laura Stanton.

Sophie Cole.

Margaret Cole.

Margaret felt her skin crawl.

Sophie stepped inside.

"No."

Her voice barely existed.

She opened the folder with her name.

Bank statements.

Photographs.

Medical notes.

Printed text messages.

Edited screenshots.

Draft affidavits.

Insurance policies.

A copy of Thomas's trust.

Then she found a document dated six days earlier.

PETITION FOR EMERGENCY CUSTODY OF EMMA COLE.

Sophie stopped breathing.

Eric reached the bottom of the stairs.

"This isn't what you think."

Margaret laughed in disbelief.

"What exactly should we think?"

Eric ignored her.

He looked only at Sophie.

"I was protecting you."

Sophie turned.

"From what?"

"Yourself."

She stared at him.

Then looked at the shelves.

"Why is Laura's name here?"

Eric stepped closer.

"She was sick."

Margaret moved between him and Sophie.

"Stay back."

Eric pointed at Emma.

"You just threw boiling soup while holding my daughter."

Margaret looked at him.

"You were burning her."

"No."

Sophie stared at her husband.

"I saw her foot."

Eric's expression flickered.

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

"It was an accident."

Everyone turned.

Eric's face filled with fury.

Vanessa realized what she had done.

Sophie whispered.

"An accident?"

Vanessa backed up.

"I meant the pot."

"No."

Sophie stepped toward her.

"You meant Emma."

Vanessa looked at Eric.

Eric shouted.

"Stop talking."

Sophie lifted her phone.

She began photographing everything.

Eric lunged.

Margaret pushed the desk chair into his path.

He stumbled.

Sophie took more photographs.

Vanessa ran upstairs.

Eric reached for Sophie's phone.

She backed away.

Then the basement lights went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Emma screamed.

Sophie shouted.

"Mom!"

"I'm here."

A heavy crash sounded near the desk.

Then Eric's voice.

"Give me the phone."

Sophie ran toward where she remembered the stairs.

Someone grabbed her sweater.

She screamed.

Margaret heard the struggle.

"Let her go!"

Then another voice came from the darkness.

Vanessa.

"Eric, the police are coming."

Everything stopped.

Eric released Sophie.

"What?"

Vanessa stood at the top of the stairs, lit by daylight from the kitchen.

Her face was white.

"I called them."

Eric stared at her.

"You what?"

Vanessa backed away.

"You burned a baby."

Eric began climbing.

Vanessa ran.

Sophie whispered.

"Mom."

Margaret moved toward her.

"Take Emma."

Sophie received the baby.

Margaret stepped toward the desk.

"What are you doing?"

"We need something he can't delete."

She felt blindly across the desk.

Her fingers touched the laptop.

Then a small external drive.

She pulled the cable.

The drive came free.

Margaret shoved it into her cardigan pocket.

From upstairs came shouting.

A door slammed.

Then tires squealed outside.

Eric had left.

Vanessa stood in the kitchen trembling.

Sophie carried Emma upstairs.

Margaret followed.

Sirens grew louder.

Vanessa looked at Sophie.

"I didn't know he was going to do that."

Sophie stared at her.

"You blocked the door."

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"He said we just had to scare your mother."

"You blocked the door while he held my baby over boiling water."

"I didn't know."

"Stop saying that."

Sophie looked down at Emma.

The baby's foot was red.

Her crying had weakened into exhausted whimpers.

Sophie began shaking.

Margaret wrapped an arm around her.

"We're going to the hospital."

Vanessa sat down hard.

Police vehicles arrived outside.

Margaret looked through the kitchen doorway.

For the first time she realized something else.

Eric's car was gone.

So was the silver key.

Sophie looked at her empty hand.

"I dropped it downstairs."

Margaret touched the external drive in her pocket.

"It doesn't matter."

But when the first officer entered the house, Vanessa looked toward the basement.

Her expression said otherwise.

"There is another key," she whispered.

Margaret turned.

"To what?"

Vanessa looked at Sophie.

Then at Emma.

And finally at the refrigerator.

"A safe."

Sophie stared at her.

"What is inside it?"

May you like

Vanessa began crying.

"Enough to destroy all of us."
