THE HOUSE THAT WAS NEVER HERS / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15 - The Name Beneath the Name

The cedar box sat on the kitchen island.

Natalie placed the original deed beside it.

The house was silent.

Madison had left.

Cynthia was gone.

Daniel was unreachable.

And somewhere in the world, according to Cynthia, Natalie's mother was alive.

Natalie unlocked the cedar box.

She removed the final document.

This time, she read every word.

The trust had been created before Natalie was born.

Her grandmother had transferred ownership of the Westlake property to Natalie.

But there was another clause.

A clause that had been hidden beneath a later amendment.

Natalie's hands began shaking.

She read it again.

The property was not simply meant to protect Natalie.

It was meant to preserve evidence.

Evidence connected to a secret family agreement.

At the bottom of the page was a second name.

Not Cynthia.

Not Daniel.

Not Richard.

A name Natalie had never seen.

She stared at it.

Then she remembered the photograph.

The man standing behind her mother.

The man everyone had pretended did not exist.

Natalie searched the name online.

Nothing.

She searched old business records.

Nothing.

She searched court records.

Nothing.

Then she found one result.

A newspaper archive.

The article was eighteen years old.

Natalie opened it.

Her heart stopped.

The headline described a disappearance involving a wealthy Austin family.

The photograph attached to the article showed her mother.

But the article identified her by a different last name.

Natalie read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

Then the final line.

She suddenly understood why her grandmother had never told her the truth.

The story wasn't about a dead woman.

It was about a woman who had been hiding.

Natalie's phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

No one spoke.

Then a woman's voice whispered,

“Natalie?”

Natalie gripped the phone.

“Mom?”

Silence.

Then the woman said,

“Do not trust Richard.”

The call ended.

Natalie stood frozen.

A second message appeared.

This time it contained only an address.

She looked at the address.

It was not a home.

It was a hospital.

Natalie grabbed her keys.

Before she could leave, the front door slowly opened.

Daniel stood there.

His shirt was torn.

His face was exhausted.

He looked at the cedar box.

Then at Natalie.

“You opened it.”

Natalie nodded.

“Tell me the truth.”

Daniel closed the door behind him.

“I will.”

He looked toward the windows.

Then lowered his voice.

“But before I do, you need to understand something.”

“What?”

Daniel stared at the document.

“Your grandmother didn't leave you the house because she wanted you to own it.”

Natalie frowned.

“Then why?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Because she knew one day someone would come looking for what is hidden beneath it.”

Natalie stared at him.

“What is hidden?”

Daniel looked toward the basement.

Before he could answer, every light in the mansion flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the security system activated by itself.

A voice came through the speakers.

“Welcome home, Natalie.”

Daniel's face went white.

Natalie slowly turned toward him.

“Who was that?”

Daniel didn't answer.

The voice returned.

“This is the final warning.”

The basement door opened by itself.

Daniel whispered,

“They found us.”

Natalie looked at the cedar box.

Then at the basement.

Then at the hospital address still glowing on her phone.

Somewhere between those three places was the truth about her mother.

And somewhere in the shadows was the person who had spent eighteen years making sure Natalie never found it.

Natalie picked up the original deed.

She looked directly at her father.

“If you're finally ready to tell me the truth…”

Daniel nodded.

Natalie continued,

“Then we're going downstairs.”

They walked toward the basement together.

But neither of them noticed the small camera hidden above the kitchen doorway.

On another screen, miles away, someone watched them disappear into the darkness.

A man's voice quietly said,

“She finally opened the box.”

Another voice answered,

“And?”

May you like

The man smiled.

“Now we can begin.”
