Chapter 7 - the letter written before harper was born

At the hospital, doctors confirmed that Harper’s condition had stabilized.

She remained tired and confused, but she was awake. Claire sat beside her bed while Nolan spoke with investigators in the hallway.

The birthday glitter was still on Harper’s cheek.

A nurse offered to remove it, but Harper refused.

“Dad liked sparkly things,” she said.

Claire smiled sadly.

“He pretended not to.”

“He had a sparkly shirt?”

“He had a silver jacket he wore exactly once.”

“Why only once?”

“Because I told him he looked like a disco ball.”

Harper considered this.

“What’s a disco ball?”

Claire laughed despite everything.

“I’ll show you when we get home.”

Harper’s eyes drifted closed.

When she was asleep, Claire stepped into the hallway.

Nolan stood with Detective Lena Ortiz and Officer Ross. The damaged security recorder sat inside an evidence container.

“Can they recover the footage?” Claire asked.

Ortiz nodded.

“The drive looks intact. It will take time to authenticate and extract everything.”

“What about Mercer?”

“We have units searching the area. The vehicle waiting outside the gate used stolen plates.”

“And Sabrina?”

“She’s refusing to answer questions without an attorney.”

“Margaret?”

“She claims the person in the footage could be anyone wearing a similar jacket.”

Nolan shook his head.

“She changed clothes before the police arrived.”

Claire looked at him.

“What?”

“She was wearing cream at the party. By the time officers entered, she had changed into navy.”

Ortiz made a note.

“We recovered the cream jacket from an upstairs dressing room. The family ring was not in her jewelry case.”

Claire remembered Margaret’s words.

The people who made me plan this.

“Do you believe she was forced?” Ortiz asked.

“I believe Margaret says whatever protects Margaret.”

“But you think there are others involved.”

“Daniel Mercer. Maybe members of the company board.”

Ortiz looked toward Claire’s handbag.

“You mentioned an envelope.”

Claire removed it.

Andrew’s handwriting appeared across the front.

For Claire, when the Vale family stops pretending.

Her hands began to shake.

Nolan guided her toward a quiet consultation room.

Ortiz remained outside while Claire broke the seal.

Inside was a handwritten letter and a small brass key.

Claire unfolded the letter.

Claire,

If Edwin gives you this, then my family has discovered the truth, or they are close enough that silence has become dangerous.

I need you to know I did not leave you without protection.

There are documents held outside the Vale estate. They prove my shares were placed into a trust for any child I might have. Margaret cannot revoke it. The board cannot vote around it.

But the shares are not the reason they will come after you.

Two months ago, I found irregular transfers inside Vale Life Sciences. The money was routed through charitable programs connected to children’s medical research. The public records looked clean. The private records were not.

Mercer knows I copied the files.

Margaret knows I hid them.

Neither knows where.

If our child is ever drawn into this, do not trust the first person who claims to be helping. The company has eyes inside the police, the hospital, and the courts.

The brass key opens deposit box 417 at Northbridge Private Bank.

Inside, you will find the trust documents and instructions for accessing the evidence.

There is one more thing.

My mother believes control is the same as protection.

She will hurt anyone she loves if she convinces herself it is necessary.

Do not let her teach our child that fear is love.

I am sorry I did not tell you sooner.

Andrew

Claire read the letter twice.

Then a third time.

Nolan stood near the door, his face hard.

“They used a child’s birthday to activate a custody clause because Harper controls Andrew’s shares.”

“That may only be part of it.”

“The evidence Andrew copied is still hidden.”

“And they think Harper leads to it.”

A quiet sound came from the hallway.

The consultation-room door was not fully closed.

Claire opened it.

A hospital staff member in gray scrubs stood beside Harper’s door, holding a medication tray.

Claire had never seen him before.

“Can I help you?” she asked.

He looked at the room number.

“I’m here to administer her next dose.”

Nolan stepped into the hallway.

“She doesn’t have a scheduled dose.”

The man froze.

Ortiz moved toward him.

“Identification.”

May you like

He dropped the tray.

Then he ran.
