Chapter 5 - the recording that should not exist

Harper’s collapse lasted only seconds, but to Claire it seemed to divide the world into two parts.
Before.
And after.
Before, there had been balloons, candles, forced smiles, and quiet threats.
After, there was only Harper’s weight in her arms.
“Harper!”
Nolan moved everyone back.
“Give her space.”
He checked her breathing and pulse, speaking calmly even as his jaw tightened.
“She’s breathing. Claire, keep her head supported.”
“I’m here,” Claire whispered. “Mommy’s here.”
Harper’s fingers remained wrapped around the handle of the unicorn cup.
Nolan removed it carefully and placed it inside a clear plastic evidence bag from his medical kit.
“Who prepared this drink?”
Sabrina pointed at Claire immediately.
“She did. She’s always careless.”
Nolan stared at her.
Claire did not even look up.
“I didn’t prepare anything.”
“The cup was at your table,” Sabrina insisted. “You brought it from home.”
“The cup was Margaret’s gift.”
Several relatives turned toward the grandmother.
Margaret unfolded her arms.
“I purchased a set of birthday cups. That proves nothing.”
Nolan called for emergency transport and provided Harper’s information.
Then Claire remembered the medication pouch.
She opened it.
One compartment was empty.
“The emergency injector is gone.”
Nolan looked at the pouch.
“You checked it earlier.”
“It was there.”
Harper’s bracelet was missing.
Her emergency medicine was missing.
The wrong drink had appeared in her cup.
None of it could be accidental.
Claire looked toward the kitchen camera.
“Check the recording.”
Sabrina backed toward the dispenser.
“The cameras aren’t working.”
“You said the upstairs cameras weren’t working,” Claire replied. “Not the kitchen camera.”
Margaret’s voice became sharp.
“This is not the time.”
“This is exactly the time.”
The event manager approached the security cabinet near the kitchen.
“The recorder is gone.”
A wave of shocked whispers moved through the guests.
Nolan looked around the room.
“Does anyone have remote access?”
The event manager hesitated.
“The system can be viewed through a phone application, but only registered administrators have access.”
“Who are they?”
“Mrs. Vale, Mr. Mercer, and the head of security.”
Margaret reached into her handbag.
“My phone is upstairs.”
“Where is Mercer?” Claire demanded.
No one answered.
Then a teenage boy near the balloon arch raised his hand.
“I might have a recording.”
Everyone turned.
His name was Leo, one of Andrew’s distant cousins.
He held a small camera mounted on a stabilizer.
“I’ve been filming the party for Harper,” he said. “The kitchen monitor was visible in the background of some shots.”
Claire stood carefully, still holding Harper.
“Show us.”
Leo opened his footage.
The images were shaky at first. Children ran past the lens. A balloon blocked part of the view. Sabrina appeared near the dispenser, speaking to a server.
Behind her, a wall-mounted security monitor displayed the live kitchen feed.
Nolan enlarged the section.
The monitor image was small but clear enough.
Sabrina removed Harper’s unicorn cup from a tray.
She filled it from the purple dispenser.
Then someone behind her extended a hand.
A silver object appeared.
Claire recognized the crescent-shaped medical bracelet.
Nolan looked toward Sabrina.
Sabrina went pale.
Margaret stepped forward.
“That image is too unclear to establish anything.”
Nolan continued enlarging the footage.
The cream-colored sleeve came into view.
Then the family ring.
Claire looked directly at Margaret’s jacket.
“You knew her bracelet was missing.”
“Do not make reckless accusations.”
Nolan replayed the footage.
The monitor had captured sound as well.
A voice emerged through Leo’s camera speaker.
“Once the mother is blamed, the custody clause activates.”
The room froze.
Margaret reached for the camera.
Leo moved away.
“Give me that,” she ordered.
Nolan stepped between them.
“No.”
Margaret’s public mask disappeared.
Her eyes hardened.
“You have no authority in this house.”
“An unconscious child gives me all the authority I need to preserve evidence.”
Sabrina suddenly lunged toward Leo.
Two relatives stopped her.
The camera slipped but remained recording.
In the confusion, Claire saw movement near the garden doors.
Daniel Mercer stood outside.
He held the missing security recorder under one arm.
A black vehicle waited behind him.
Claire shouted, “Nolan!”
Mercer looked back.

For one second, his eyes met Claire’s.
Then he ran.
