Chapter 2: The Wedding That Became a Trap

The wedding day was perfect.

The garden behind the Vance mansion was covered in white flowers. Lights hung from the trees like falling stars. Guests smiled, music played softly, and everyone called it the most beautiful wedding the family had ever hosted.

Katherine wore a classic white wedding dress and carried a bouquet of white roses tied with a pale blue ribbon.

When she walked down the aisle, Caleb stood at the end, watching her.

No one knew there was an old envelope hidden inside his jacket.

No one knew that with every step Katherine took toward him, Caleb felt love and hatred tearing him apart.

When the officiant asked Caleb if he accepted Katherine as his wife, he stayed silent for a moment too long.

Grace leaned forward, worried.

Katherine looked at him with complete trust.

Caleb swallowed hard.

“I do,” he said.

Katherine smiled.

She did not know that, for Caleb, those words were not a beginning.

They were the final step in his plan.

That night, after the guests left and the music faded, Grace walked Katherine to the wedding bedroom herself. Before leaving, she adjusted Katherine’s veil and smiled through tears.

“Thank you for coming into this family,” Grace said.

Katherine hugged her tightly.

“Thank you for treating me like a daughter.”

Grace did not notice the sadness in Katherine’s eyes when she said it.

After Grace left, Katherine stood alone in the decorated room. She placed her bouquet on the table, removed her gloves, and looked around.

She had imagined this night as the start of happiness.

But Katherine also carried a secret.

A secret about Beatrice.

She had planned to tell Caleb after the wedding. She had waited two years, not because she wanted to deceive him, but because of a promise she had made long ago. She needed to know Beatrice was truly safe before revealing everything.

That morning, Katherine had received a message from an unknown number.

“Kate, I’m coming. If I don’t reach you in time, give the item in the bouquet to Grace. Don’t trust Marianne.”

Katherine had gone cold when she read the final line.

Don’t trust Marianne.

She knew then that she could not wait any longer.

But before she could remove the small pearl pin hidden beneath the blue ribbon of her bouquet, Caleb entered the room.

The door closed behind him.

He did not smile.

He did not call her his wife.

He only stood there, staring at her.

“Katherine Monroe,” he said.

Katherine froze.

No one had called her that name in years.

“Caleb…”

He pulled the old envelope from his jacket and threw it onto the bed.

“How long were you going to hide it?”

Papers spilled out.

Bank records. A written statement. A blurry photograph from the bus station.

Katherine’s face turned pale.

“Where did you get these?”

“So it’s true,” Caleb said bitterly. “You know what they are.”

Katherine shook her head.

“No, Caleb. You don’t understand.”

“I don’t understand?” His voice cracked. “My sister disappeared. You were the last person to see her. Two days later, money landed in your account. Then you changed your name and left town. And now you walk into my house, hug my mother, and let her call you her daughter?”

Tears filled Katherine’s eyes.

“I did not betray Beatrice.”

“Don’t say her name.”

Caleb stepped closer. Katherine stepped back, not because he touched her, but because the man she loved suddenly looked like a stranger.

“I thought I loved you,” Caleb said. “Or maybe I was stupid enough to believe I did. But every time I saw you smile at my mother, I kept wondering how scared Beatrice must have been when she realized her own friend had betrayed her.”

Katherine broke down.

“Caleb, Beatrice is alive.”

The room went silent.

Caleb stared at her.

Then his expression hardened.

“You still dare to use her name to lie?”

“I’m not lying.” Katherine moved toward the bouquet. “I have proof. She messaged me this morning. She—”

Caleb grabbed the bouquet before she could touch it.

White petals fell across the floor.

“Enough.”

“There’s something hidden inside it!” Katherine cried. “Caleb, listen to me. Marianne lied to you. That money was not payment for my silence. Beatrice sent it so I could help a witness who was being threatened.”

“Stop.”

Caleb’s voice was low and cold.

“Tonight was supposed to be the night everyone blessed you. Tomorrow morning, they will know who you really are. You will lose everything you stole from Beatrice.”

Katherine looked at him as if her heart had stopped.

“So it was all fake?”

Caleb said nothing.

“You got close to me, loved me, proposed to me… just to punish me?”

His silence was the cruelest answer.

Katherine lost all strength and sank to the floor.

“I can’t be your wife,” she whispered. “I can’t be the wife of a man who never believed me.”

At that moment, Grace pushed open the door.
