The Groom Whispered, “She Had to Pay”

“Mom… I can’t be this man’s wife.”

Katherine said it from the floor of the wedding bedroom, her white dress crumpled around her like a ruined cloud. Her veil had slipped sideways, her hands trembled against her chest, and her eyes were filled with a terror Grace had never expected to see on a bride’s face.

The room had been prepared for a dream.

White roses covered the bed. Soft candles glowed along the walls. Golden ribbons hung from the curtains. Only hours earlier, Grace had checked every corner herself, wanting her new daughter-in-law to feel loved when she entered this room.

But now, rose petals were scattered across the floor. The bridal bouquet lay fallen near the bed. A glass of water had shattered beside the vanity.

And Caleb, the groom, was sitting across the room in silence.

His white shirt was wrinkled. His head was lowered. His hands rested heavily on his knees, as if he had done something that even he could not bear to face.

Grace stood frozen at the doorway.

Robert, Caleb’s father, stood beside her, stunned and furious.

Grace stepped inside first.

“Katherine… what happened?”

Katherine lifted her tear-stained face. Her lips trembled. Her voice broke.

“I can’t… I can’t be his wife.”

Robert turned sharply toward his son.

“Caleb,” he said, his voice low and dangerous. “What did you do?”

The room fell completely silent.

Caleb slowly raised his head. His eyes were red, but cold. They were the eyes of a man who had been trapped inside hatred for too long.

He looked at Katherine.
