Chapter 19 - Forty Years of Trust

Daniel wanted Thomas arrested before sunrise.

The problem was proof.

The audio established Evan feared him.

Catherine’s files established a connection.

Thomas fleeing established guilt of something.

But none of it proved he had killed Catherine.

Or Evan.

Or built the conspiracy around Daniel’s wedding.

Samuel spent the next hour reconstructing the past.

Thomas had introduced Michael Holt to Daniel fourteen years earlier.

Daniel had forgotten.

Thomas had recommended the charity dinner where Daniel first met Rebecca.

That, Daniel remembered.

Thomas had been one of the few people Catherine regularly spoke to about the Haven Foundation.

And Thomas had known about Bluebird long before anyone else in the hotel.

Marcus placed a timeline on the screen.

“He had access,” he said.

“To everything,” Daniel replied.

Marcus nodded.

“Your travel schedule. Your attorneys. Your trust structure. Emily’s routines. Noah.”

Daniel looked away.

The hardest truth was not that Thomas had fooled him.

It was that Daniel had made the deception easy.

He had treated loyalty like a permanent credential.

Once someone earned his trust, Daniel rarely required them to earn it again.

Emily sat opposite him.

“Dad.”

He looked at her.

“You were right about Rebecca.”

“This isn’t about that.”

“I defended Thomas too.”

“You had forty years with him.”

“And four with Mom while she was frightened of something I never bothered to see.”

Samuel lowered his eyes.

“We all failed her.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No. Catherine tried to tell us.”

He looked at Samuel.

“Recover the rest of the video.”

“The corrupted section?”

“Yes.”

“It may be impossible.”

“Try.”

Marcus’s phone rang.

His face changed while listening.

“What happened?” Daniel asked.

Marcus ended the call.

“They found the stolen vehicle.”

“Thomas?”

“No.”

“Where?”

“Lake Haven airport.”

Daniel stood.

“He took a plane?”

“No departures matching him.”

Richard leaned forward.

“Then why leave the car there?”

Marcus answered.

“To make us think he left.”

Daniel understood immediately.

Thomas was still nearby.

His phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

A video appeared.

Daniel opened it.

Thomas sat in a dark room.

No visible windows.

No identifying background.

He looked tired.

But calm.

“Daniel,” he said, “if you’re seeing files calling me the Steward, Catherine’s trap worked.”

Richard scoffed.

Daniel silenced him.

Thomas continued.

“She knew one day somebody would find Bluebird. She also knew that person would need someone to blame.”

Emily whispered, “He’s lying.”

Thomas looked directly into the camera.

“You want the truth? Ask Samuel who created Bellweather.”

Samuel went pale.

Thomas smiled sadly.

“Ask him who signed the original partnership agreement.”

The video ended.

Everyone turned toward Samuel.

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“Who created Bellweather?”

Samuel did not answer.

“Samuel.”

The old lawyer finally looked at him.

“Your father.”

Daniel stared.

May you like

Samuel added the second name.

“And Thomas.”
