THE GRAVE THAT GAVE HIS DAUGHTER BACK

Orpheus was not resurrection. It was something more calculated and, to Santiago, more obscene.

After a selected heir died, Janus intended to condition another child to assume the dead child's identity. Memories, habits, handwriting, recorded voices, and family histories were studied until the living host could pass as the person who had been lost.

Sofia had been Phase One because she lived inside the Morales family while technicians collected thousands of hours of observation. Alma had been prepared as the host.

The recordings played in San Jerónimo were not only designed to make Alma accept abandonment. They taught her Sofia's preferences, stories, and gestures. Gabriel planned to return Alma to Santiago after Sofia's death and claim trauma had altered her appearance and memory.

Santiago felt physically ill when Alma told him she knew things no stranger should know.

She knew where Sofia had hidden a broken music box.

She knew the name of the imaginary island Santiago invented during hospital nights.

She knew the final words Sofia spoke before the monitors went silent.

"She said, don't let the boat leave without me," Alma whispered.

Only Santiago had been in the room.

A camera had been hidden there.

"Those memories are not yours," he said gently. "But knowing them does not make you less yourself."

"What if I can't tell which parts are me?"

Elena answered before Santiago could. "Then you do not have to decide all at once. People are made from what happens to them, what others teach them, and what they choose afterward. What they forced into you is part of your history, but it is not your owner."

Renata suggested they create new memories no file could predict. They painted the kitchen wall with their hands. They camped in the living room during a storm. They baked a cake so badly that Lucía used it to hold open a door.

For several weeks, life grew almost ordinary.

Then children connected to Janus began disappearing from protective homes across three countries.

Each disappearance occurred after a package arrived containing an object from a deceased relative. Authorities suspected Orpheus had sleeper agents inside survivor networks.

Camila led an international task force. Nora prosecuted Helena and Rivas. Celeste refused to speak except to ask whether Alma still dreamed in Sofia's voice.

Marisol studied the Orpheus records and found a repeated signature hidden in the data tables: G.M.

They assumed Gabriel Morales.

But one file predated Gabriel's involvement by ten years.

"The initials belong to someone else," Marisol said.

The answer came from Isadora's private archives. Her father was Gustavo Morales, co-founder of Janus. His death certificate was dated thirty-two years earlier, but the physician who signed it was Dr. Celeste Armand.

Santiago almost laughed at the pattern. In this family, death certificates were invitations to doubt.

A storage unit rented under Gustavo's name contained recent surveillance photographs of the twins, Elena, Lucía, Marisol, and Santiago. One image showed Gabriel entering a mansion in Switzerland six months earlier.

Another showed him kneeling before an elderly man whose face was hidden.

On the back was written:

The son reports to the father.

Gabriel had not created the full system. He had inherited it.

The task force identified the mansion as Château d'Orphée, owned by a biomedical charity. Before agents could obtain warrants, the building burned. No bodies were recovered.

One item survived in a fireproof safe: a recording addressed to Santiago.

On screen, an elderly man sat in shadow.

"You have dismantled Janus," he said. "You believe that makes you different from us. Yet you used blood tests to claim your daughters, documents to restore your marriage, and money to purchase justice for survivors. You still worship the same instruments."

The man leaned forward just enough for light to reveal Gabriel's eyes in an older face.

Gustavo Morales.

"Bring Alma to me," he continued, "and I will return the children taken under Orpheus. Refuse, and each child will wake believing they are someone who died."

The screen changed to a live grid showing twelve missing children in twelve white rooms.

One room was empty.
