The Janus files finally identified the child Santiago had raised.

Her birth name was Sofia Valez, younger sister of Teresa Valez, the nurse buried beneath the chapel. Sofia's parents had discovered that Teresa was collecting evidence against Janus. Gabriel ordered the family eliminated, but Isadora took Sofia and placed her with Santiago as a public heir.

Teresa had spent years searching for her little sister while secretly helping Elena hide the ledger.

Santiago visited Teresa's grave with Inés Valez, one of the adult survivors rescued from San Jerónimo. Inés was Teresa's cousin and Sofia's only living biological relative.

"She was loved," Santiago told her. "She liked yellow ribbons, strawberry ice cream, and stories about ships. She was brave when she was afraid."

Inés cried and gave him a photograph of Sofia as a baby.

For the first time, Santiago could mourn Valentina without wondering whether his memories belonged to a lie. Her beginning had been stolen, but her life had been real.

Renata placed wildflowers beside the new stone. Alma placed the red-dressed doll. Santiago left the worn blue doll and immediately regretted the emptiness in his hand.

Alma noticed and returned it to him.

"She gave you memories," Alma said. "You can keep something too."

The family began rebuilding in small ways. Lucía moved into a house near Elena and Santiago but refused to surrender her role as Renata's mother. Elena agreed without hesitation.

"A child can have more than one person who stayed," she said.

Santiago resigned as chief executive of Morales Maritime and placed the company under independent supervision while investigators reviewed Janus payments. He used his remaining shares to establish a restitution fund for survivors.

Some shareholders called it surrender. He called it returning stolen time in the only currency the corporation understood.

The court invalidated the forged divorce and Gabriel's marriage to Elena. It recognized Renata and Alma as the twins' chosen names and granted shared parental rights to Santiago and Elena, with Lucía legally named Renata's second guardian.

The decision felt satisfying, but the girls did not heal according to legal schedules.

Renata feared hospitals. Alma feared mirrors. Elena sometimes woke believing she was back in E-17. Santiago sometimes drove to the cemetery before realizing he had intended to go home.

They began therapy together and separately. They learned that truth did not repair a family by itself. Truth only gave them honest tools.

Voss testified against Helena, Rivas, and dozens of Janus collaborators. In exchange, he received a reduced sentence but remained imprisoned for kidnapping, attempted murder, and conspiracy.

During Santiago's final visit before trial, Voss pushed a bracelet through the slot beneath the glass.

It was engraved Valentina.

"Gabriel gave me this after the coffin was emptied," Voss said. "He told me to keep it as proof that you could be controlled through grief."

Santiago closed his hand around it.

"Why return it now?"

"Because Sofia bit me once when I tried to move her from the hospital. She was six. She said her father would find her. I laughed."

Voss looked away.

"You did find her. Too late, but you kept looking without knowing. Maybe that matters."

Santiago did not forgive him. Forgiveness was not a fee paid for one useful act. But he accepted the bracelet.

As he left, Voss tapped the glass.

"Gabriel had a phrase when a Janus site was compromised. He said, close one face, open the other."

"What does it mean?"

"I thought it meant relocate. Now I think Janus had a second program."

That evening, Santiago searched the recovered files for the phrase. Most results had been deleted. One surviving page listed a project called Orpheus.

Its purpose was described in one sentence.
