Chapter 13 - the truth amelia could not say)

Amelia returned to the city under federal protection.
The reunion the public saw was carefully controlled.
No reporters entered the hospital.
No cameras filmed Ethan crying against his mother’s shoulder.
No journalists saw the first night Amelia sat beside his bed because Ethan was afraid she might disappear if he closed his eyes.
For several days, they avoided the hardest questions.
They talked about small things.
School.
Books.
Food.
Amelia cried when she learned Ethan still hated tomatoes.
Ethan laughed when he learned she had spent months working in a bakery while hiding under another name.
At night, however, silence returned.
Too many years stood between them.
Finally, Ethan asked.
“Why didn’t you tell me about the other beneficiary?”
Amelia looked toward the window.
“I wanted one week.”
“One week of what?”
“Being your mother again.”
“You are my mother.”
“I know.”
“Then tell me.”
She sat beside him.
“The truth is complicated.”
“I’m getting tired of adults saying that.”
Amelia almost smiled.
Then she took his hand.
“Harrison Vale had two sons.”
“Dad and Samuel.”
“Yes.”
“But Samuel is the other beneficiary?”
“No.”
Ethan felt a knot in his stomach.
“Harrison had a daughter.”
Ethan stared.
“Who?”
Amelia’s voice became quiet.
“Danielle Brooks.”
The room seemed to lose sound.
“Nia’s mom?”
“Yes.”
“That means Nia is…”
“Your cousin.”
Ethan stared at the door.
Nia had spent weeks beside him.
Helped him escape.
Helped him stand.
Risked her life bringing Amelia’s evidence.
And none of them knew they shared blood.
Amelia explained.
Harrison had relationships with three women across many years.
Samuel was his first child.
Charles was his second.
Danielle was born much later.
Her mother worked in one of Harrison’s offices.
Harrison privately acknowledged Danielle.
He established educational accounts for her.
He also revised the trust to include all three family lines.
Charles discovered it after Harrison’s death.
Danielle was still a teenager.
Charles’s lawyers pressured her mother into accepting a settlement.
The trust amendment vanished.
Danielle grew up believing the family wanted nothing to do with her.
Years later, she unknowingly began working for a transport company connected to Charles.
When Charles recognized her name, he deliberately kept her close.
“He wanted to watch her,” Amelia said.
“Then the crash happened.”
“Yes.”
“And she helped you.”
“She saved me.”
After the collision, Danielle followed the men who removed Amelia.
Later, she helped Amelia escape the clinic.
They lost contact for years.
When Amelia finally found Danielle again, they realized they shared an enemy.
“What does the trust mean now?”
“Legally, it will take years to resolve.”
“Does Nia get money?”
“If the document is authenticated, she has rights Charles tried to erase.”
Ethan thought of Nia’s bare feet on the ballroom marble.
Hundreds of wealthy guests had stared at her as if she did not belong.
All while she was a descendant of the man whose fortune built the room.
The irony almost made him laugh.
Then something bothered him.
“Where is the original trust?”
Amelia looked at him.
“I don’t have it.”
“But the video…”
“I lied.”
“Why?”
“Because Charles was listening.”
Ethan slowly understood.
She had made Charles believe she possessed the original document.
“You used yourself as bait.”
“I needed him to come out.”
“You could have died.”
“Yes.”
Ethan pulled his hand away.
“Don’t do that again.”
Amelia’s eyes filled.
“I’m sorry.”
“No. Everybody keeps deciding what I should know. What I should take. Where I should live. What my body can do. What danger I can understand.”
“You’re right.”
“I’m not asking whether I’m right.”
Amelia nodded.
“I won’t do it again.”
Ethan studied her.
“Promise?”
“I promise.”
The original trust was still missing.
Only copies and references remained.
Without it, Nia’s claim would be difficult.
Charles’s criminal case, however, was overwhelming.
Crane agreed to testify.
Reeves testified.
Danielle testified.
Mabel testified.
Financial records corroborated payments.
Medical experts documented deliberate suppression of Ethan’s rehabilitation.
Charles was charged with conspiracy, fraud, kidnapping, witness intimidation, medical abuse, obstruction, and other crimes connected to the crash and its aftermath.
The foundation board removed him.
Vale Development appointed temporary leadership.
For the first time, Charles controlled almost nothing.
Ethan watched the announcement with Nia.
She sat beside his hospital bed eating crackers.
“So we’re cousins,” she said.
“Apparently.”
“That’s weird.”
“Very.”
“Does that mean I have to be nice to you?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Ethan threw a pillow at her.
She laughed.
Later that afternoon, he walked twenty-seven steps with braces.
Amelia watched.
She did not cheer loudly.
She did not tell him to be brave.
She simply cried.
At step twenty-seven, Ethan reached her.
She hugged him.
For a moment, the story seemed finished.
Charles had been caught.
Amelia had returned.
Nia had found her mother.
Ethan was recovering.
But that evening, Samuel Reeves arrived carrying an old cardboard box.
“I found something in my father’s files.”
Inside was a photograph of Harrison Vale.
Three children stood beside him.
Samuel.
Charles.
Danielle.
And another little boy Ethan had never seen.
Ethan looked at Reeves.
“You said Harrison had three children.”
Reeves stared at the photograph.
“That’s what I believed.”
On the back, written in Harrison’s handwriting, were four names.
Samuel.
Charles.
Danielle.
Jonathan.
Amelia turned pale.
Ethan noticed.
“You know that name.”
She shook her head too quickly.
“Mom.”
Amelia looked frightened.
Not surprised.
May you like
Frightened.
And Ethan realized the Vale family still had another secret.
