Chapter 8 - the passage beneath the altar

Emergency lights flickered on.
The choir balcony was empty.
Claire and Nora had vanished.
Julian ran toward the side stairs, but Marcus blocked the aisle.
“You caused this,” Marcus said.
Julian seized the front of his jacket.
“Where did they go?”
Marcus smiled faintly.
“You still think I control what happens in this house.”
A section of the floor beneath the altar dropped with a violent mechanical groan.
Guests cried out and moved toward the walls. The floral arch tilted as a hidden platform descended several feet, exposing a stone staircase.
Evelyn lifted her gown and ran down.
Julian released Marcus and followed her.
The stairs led to a circular chamber beneath the chapel. Rusted pipes lined the walls, and old children’s names had been scratched into the stone.
Nora’s voice echoed from a passage ahead.
“Julian!”
He ran toward her.
Claire and Nora stood beside a blue metal door. Claire was trying to turn the stolen key in its lock.
“It won’t open,” she said.
Julian took the key.
EAST ARCHIVE 3 had not referred to a room number.
It referred to the third lock.
He turned the key halfway, pressed the crescent symbol on his cuff link against a shallow mark in the door and heard a mechanism release.
“How did you know?” Claire asked.
“The symbols match.”
The blue door opened.
A woman lay on a narrow bed inside the room.
Her dark hair had been cut unevenly near one side of her face. She wore a simple gray dress, and one wrist was attached to the bed frame with a soft restraint.
For a moment, Julian could not breathe.
She had Elena’s face.
Nora rushed inside.
“Aunt Elena!”
The woman opened her eyes.
“Nora?”
Her voice was weak, but the way she spoke the child’s name was different from Evelyn. There was no caution or calculation in it. Only relief.
Nora wrapped her arms around her.
Julian removed the restraint.
The real Elena looked up at him.
“You wore the cuff links.”
He froze.
“What?”
“You told me you hated them.”
Julian remembered a winter evening at his mother’s cabin. Elena had found the cuff links in an old box. He had told her he would never wear anything that reminded him of his father’s secrets.
Evelyn had known the proposal story.
She had not known that.
Julian helped Elena stand.
“How long have you been here?”
“Since last night.”
“What did they give you?”
“I don’t know. I could hear them moving through the walls.”
Nora held Elena’s face between her hands.
“I knew you were alive.”
Elena kissed her forehead.
“You were supposed to stay with Mrs. Hale.”
“They tricked me.”
A sound came from the passage.
Evelyn stood in the doorway.
For the first time, Julian saw the sisters together.
They were almost perfectly identical, but not completely.
Elena’s face softened whenever she looked at Nora.
Evelyn’s never did.
Behind Evelyn, Marcus held Claire by the arm.
“Step away from the archive,” he ordered.
Julian moved in front of Elena and Nora.
“You have lost.”
Marcus shook his head.
“The guests heard a recording without context. By the time the police arrive, they will find you in a sealed room with an unconscious woman and a kidnapped child.”
“Elena is not unconscious.”
“She will be.”
Evelyn looked at her sister.
“You should have stayed hidden.”
Elena steadied herself against the bed.
“You should never have involved Nora.”
“She was mine before she was yours.”
Nora clung to Elena.
“I’m not yours.”
The words struck Evelyn harder than any accusation.
Her expression finally broke.
“You do not understand what she took from me.”
Elena’s voice remained quiet.
“I took you away from her because you left her alone for six days.”
“I was coming back.”
“You always say that after you disappear.”
Marcus tightened his grip on Claire.
“Enough. We open the archive now.”
Julian looked past them.
“You still don’t know where it is.”
“The blue room is the entrance.”
“No. It is a decoy.”
Marcus’s eyes narrowed.
Julian had guessed, but Marcus’s reaction confirmed it.
The true archive was somewhere deeper in the passage.
Evelyn raised a small remote.
“Your father designed the eastern wing to seal itself during a security breach.”
Her thumb hovered over the button.
“If I press this, every door beneath the chapel closes.”
“You would trap yourself too.”
“I know another exit.”
Elena looked toward the children’s names scratched into the wall.
“No, you don’t.”
Evelyn glanced at her.
Elena pointed to the oldest inscription.
It read:
THE WALL OPENS FOR THE GIRL WHO HAS NO NAME.
“I found the map before you took me,” Elena said. “The passage was designed for the children, not the directors.”
Evelyn pressed the remote.
Steel doors began dropping across the corridors.
Julian pulled Nora and Elena into the blue room. Claire broke free from Marcus and followed.
The final door fell between them and Evelyn.
Marcus’s hand shot through the narrowing gap and caught Julian’s jacket.
Julian tore away.
The steel barrier struck the floor.

They were sealed inside.
Then the wall behind the narrow bed began moving.
