THE GIRL BEHIND THE WALL / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12 - the sister without a face

Elena had met the third sister in a railway station.

She told the story in Julian’s study while dawn turned the windows gray.

“I was investigating St. Agnes,” she said. “I had discovered that Evelyn was alive, but I didn’t know where she was. A woman called me and told me to go to Bellweather Station alone.”

“The place where we met,” Julian said.

Elena nodded.

“That was not a coincidence.”

Julian felt the first crack appear beneath everything he believed about their relationship.

“You arranged our first meeting?”

“No. I was waiting for the woman. You spilled tea over my notes.”

“Tea,” Julian said quietly.

The answer Evelyn had failed to remember.

Elena continued.

“The woman never showed her full face. She wore a scarf and stood behind the glass barrier. But she had our eyes.”

“Did she give you her name?”

“She called herself Eve.”

“Evelyn?”

“She said Evelyn was only a role. She gave me the E-19 key and told me a child would need protection.”

“Nora.”

“Three days later, Mrs. Hale found Nora outside her house.”

Nora listened from beside Claire.

“Did the woman say who I was?”

“No,” Elena said. “Only that people would come looking for you.”

Julian walked to the fireplace.

“You knew our meeting was connected to St. Agnes. You knew my father had investigated it.”

“I suspected.”

“Yet you entered my life and said nothing.”

“At first, I only wanted access to public foundation records. Then I discovered you were not like the men who ran St. Agnes.”

“So you stayed.”

“I fell in love with you.”

Julian looked at her.

“Did that happen before or after you learned I could open the archive?”

The question hurt them both.

Elena’s voice became almost inaudible.

“Before.”

He wanted to believe her.

But Marcus had lied for years. Evelyn had worn Elena’s memories. Even Nora’s identity had been built from stolen pieces.

Trust was no longer a feeling. It was evidence waiting to be tested.

Claire examined the E-19 key.

“What does it open?”

Mrs. Bell brought the torn ledger page closer.

A small drawing appeared beside Subject E-19’s number. It depicted a bell tower.

“There is no bell tower at Ashford House,” Victoria said.

“There was at St. Agnes,” Mrs. Bell replied. “It was removed after the institution closed.”

Julian looked through the study window.

The old stone garden house had been built with blocks from the demolished tower.

They crossed the wet lawn as police continued searching the estate. Behind the garden house, Nora found a crescent symbol carved into a stone near the foundation.

Julian inserted the E-19 key.

Part of the floor lifted.

Beneath it was a sealed metal case.

Inside were three passports, a stack of currency and a video cassette labeled FOR ELENA.

The passports contained photographs of Elena, Evelyn and a third woman with the same eyes but different features.

Her name was Iris Voss.

“Not identical,” Claire said.

Elena studied the photograph.

“But she could still be our sister.”

Julian found an old video player in the archive equipment room. They returned to the library and inserted the cassette.

A woman appeared on-screen.

Her face matched the third passport.

“My name is Iris,” she said. “At least, that is the name I chose.”

Elena moved closer to the screen.

“If you are watching this, Evelyn has begun the replacement.”

The recording had been made three years earlier.

Iris continued.

“Nora is not Evelyn’s daughter. She was selected because her age and appearance matched a missing identity. Evelyn was told the child belonged to her so she would protect Nora until the transfer was complete.”

Nora stared at the screen.

“Why would they lie to her?”

“To control her,” Elena said.

Iris looked directly into the camera.

“The Mother Ledger is not the last record. It is the list of identities that were sold. The Daughter Ledger contains the people who are still using them.”

Julian felt the meaning settle over the room.

Politicians. Business leaders. Judges. Perhaps members of the police searching the estate.

“The Daughter Ledger is hidden where the Ashford heir first met Elena,” Iris said.

Bellweather Station.

The video flickered.

“Do not trust the first sister who asks you to find it.”

The screen went black.

Seconds later, Julian’s phone rang.

The caller ID displayed Elena’s name.

The real Elena stood beside him.

Julian answered.

Evelyn’s voice came through the speaker.

“Meet me at Bellweather Station.”
