THE GATES CLOSED BEHIND THEM / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8 - The Wedding Morning

Guests filled the courtyard shortly before noon.

White chairs faced the mansion steps, where an arch of roses stood beneath the balconies. Military officers sat beside business leaders, foundation donors, and members of the press.

Ryan stood near the arch in a white formal jacket.

He smiled for photographs, but his eyes repeatedly moved toward the mansion doors.

Linda reached him moments before the ceremony began.

“We need to leave,” she whispered.

Ryan kept smiling.

“What happened?”

“She knows.”

“Knows what?”

“Everything.”

The smile remained on his face, but the color disappeared from it.

“How?”

“The workers talked. She said the accounts are frozen.”

“That is impossible.”

“I told you she was watching us.”

“You told me she was breaking.”

Linda grabbed his arm.

“We have to go now.”

Ryan looked around the courtyard.

The guests were seated. Cameras were positioned. The trust amendment waited inside his jacket.

Leaving would look like a confession.

“No,” he said. “We finish.”

“She will not sign.”

“She will when I give her the choice.”

“What choice?”

Ryan looked toward the press area.

“Her reputation or mine.”

Music began.

The mansion doors opened.

Every conversation stopped.

Evelyn appeared at the top of the steps.

Sunlight moved across the diamonds in her gown and the medals on her jacket. Her shaved head was uncovered. She stood straight, one hand resting lightly at her side.

A few guests gasped.

Others looked toward Linda.

The story of Evelyn’s emotional instability had already circulated. Linda expected whispers and judgment.

Instead, many military guests rose to their feet.

One by one, they saluted.

Evelyn returned the salute.

Then she descended the steps.

Ryan watched her approach.

She was supposed to look damaged.

She looked untouchable.

When she reached the arch, Ryan leaned closer.

“What did you tell my mother?”

“The truth.”

“You are making a mistake.”

“No. I made the mistake years ago.”

The music ended.

Mr. Talbot stepped forward, pretending to serve as the ceremony’s officiant.

“Today, Colonel Evelyn Hayes and Ryan Hayes reaffirm their commitment to family, trust, and a shared future.”

Evelyn glanced at the guests.

Investigators stood among the catering staff. Military security officers waited near the entrance. Major Brooks watched from beside the front row.

Talbot continued speaking about sacrifice.

The word sounded almost offensive in his mouth.

Ryan took Evelyn’s hand.

His grip was too tight.

“I know we have faced challenges,” he said, reading from the ceremony script. “But today, Evelyn has chosen to begin a new chapter.”

He looked toward the cameras.

“She has chosen to step away from military command and place our family first.”

Murmurs spread through the guests.

Evelyn did not react.

Ryan smiled.

“Evelyn, would you like to share your statement?”

Talbot held out a prepared page.

She accepted it.

Ryan’s shoulders relaxed.

Evelyn looked at the words describing her supposed exhaustion and instability.

Then she tore the paper in half.

The sound was soft, but every microphone captured it.

“That is not my statement,” she said.

Ryan’s smile vanished.

Evelyn turned toward the guests.

“My actual statement is brief.”

The courtyard became completely silent.

“I am not resigning from military service. I have accepted command of the Western Strategic Support Division, effective immediately.”

Several officers began applauding.

The applause spread.

Ryan stepped toward her.

“This is not what we discussed.”

“No,” Evelyn said. “It is not what you announced without my permission.”

Talbot attempted to intervene.

“There may have been a misunderstanding.”

“There were several.”

Evelyn removed the trust amendment from Ryan’s jacket pocket before he could stop her.

“You intended for me to sign this after falsely announcing that I was emotionally unfit to manage my affairs.”

Ryan reached for the document.

Military security moved closer.

He lowered his hand.

“This is a private marital matter.”

Evelyn held the amendment toward the cameras.

“It became a public matter when you used this ceremony to manipulate donors, trustees, and the press.”

Linda stood and shouted from the front row.

“She is confused! Look at what she did to herself!”

Every face turned toward Evelyn’s shaved head.

Evelyn looked at Linda.

Then she took out her phone.

A recording played through the ceremony speakers.

Linda’s voice filled the courtyard.

“You cannot stand before two hundred guests looking like the perfect decorated bride.”

Then Evelyn’s voice.

“You want me to lose control.”

The recording continued long enough for everyone to understand.

Linda looked around in horror.

Guests moved away from her.

Ryan whispered, “Turn it off.”

Evelyn did.

“For three weeks,” she said, “federal investigators have examined unauthorized transfers from the Hayes Military Family Foundation. Evidence shows that Ryan Hayes and Linda Hayes participated in a conspiracy to steal charitable funds, forge approvals, and obtain control of the Hayes family trust.”

Ryan backed away.

“This is insane.”

Major Brooks stepped forward.

“No,” he said. “It is documented.”

Military security officers closed the distance.

May you like

Ryan looked toward the mansion entrance.

The iron gates were already shutting.
