THE GATES CLOSED BEHIND THEM / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3 - The Wedding They Designed

Linda took control of the ceremony before Evelyn had approved the guest list.

She selected a diamond-covered gown from a private designer, ordered white flowers for every balcony, and arranged for black luxury vehicles to line the circular driveway. She described the event as an intimate renewal ceremony, yet more than two hundred invitations were sent.

Most went to people connected to the foundation.

Ryan insisted that Evelyn wear her ceremonial military jacket over the gown.

“It represents everything you have achieved,” he said.

Evelyn knew it also made the event useful for publicity. Photographs of a decorated colonel renewing her vows would reassure donors while Ryan continued taking their money.

She allowed the planning to continue.

Meanwhile, investigators installed court-authorized monitoring systems in Ryan’s office and traced the remaining shell companies.

Evelyn behaved exactly as Ryan expected.

She attended fittings, approved flowers, and discussed music. She even allowed Linda to choose the jewelry.

Ryan began relaxing.

One evening, Evelyn entered the library and found him holding a folder.

He closed it quickly.

“What is that?” she asked.

“Insurance documents.”

“May I see them?”

He smiled.

“You already have enough paperwork in your life.”

She held out her hand.

Ryan hesitated, then passed her the folder.

The first pages were ordinary insurance updates. Beneath them was a trust amendment.

The amendment would give Ryan temporary financial authority if Evelyn resigned from active service or was considered emotionally unable to manage her affairs.

Evelyn read the language slowly.

“Why is this here?”

Ryan moved closer.

“It is only a precaution.”

“A precaution against what?”

“Your deployments. Your stress. The possibility that something happens.”

“If something happens, my existing legal team manages the trust.”

“But I am your husband.”

“That does not make you a financial trustee.”

His expression tightened.

“Do you hear yourself?”

“Yes.”

“You treat me like an employee.”

“No. Employees are given clear responsibilities.”

The insult escaped before Evelyn could stop it.

Ryan stared at her.

Then he walked to the bar and poured a drink.

“You have changed,” he said.

“I have become more careful.”

“Because of that promotion.”

“Because someone forged my signature.”

The glass stopped halfway to his mouth.

Evelyn watched his reflection in the mirror.

“What are you talking about?”

“The foundation audit found an irregular signature.”

“Then the accountant made a mistake.”

“Perhaps.”

Ryan turned.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Linda entered the library carrying fabric samples, and Ryan’s expression transformed.

“We were discussing the wedding,” he said.

Evelyn understood the warning.

He knew she suspected something.

The investigation could no longer proceed slowly.

That night, Major Brooks contacted her.

Ryan had instructed a financial manager to prepare a transfer of twelve million dollars from the family trust. The transfer would take place immediately after Evelyn publicly announced her resignation at the wedding.

“He cannot access the trust without your signature,” Daniel said.

“He plans to obtain it.”

“How?”

“I think he will hide the amendment among the wedding documents.”

“Do not sign anything.”

“I need him to believe I will.”

Daniel exhaled.

“Evelyn, this is no longer only financial fraud. We have communications suggesting they are discussing whether you are mentally stable.”

Evelyn looked toward the bedroom door.

Ryan was downstairs.

“What communications?”

“Linda has contacted a private physician. They want him to state that you are experiencing severe stress after deployment.”

“On what basis?”

“Your appearance, your behavior, anything they can create.”

Evelyn thought of the gown fittings, the photographers, and the large guest list.

They did not only want her resignation.

They wanted a public image of instability.

“Continue monitoring,” she said.

“We also need to discuss your safety.”

“I am safe.”

“You live with the suspects.”

“I have lived in more dangerous places.”

“That does not make this safe.”

Evelyn appreciated his honesty.

She agreed to keep a secure phone with her and arranged for two investigators to work undercover among the wedding staff.

The following morning, Linda entered Evelyn’s dressing room without knocking.

She carried a small wooden box.

Inside was a diamond necklace that had belonged to Thomas’s mother.

“I thought you should wear something from the family,” Linda said.

Evelyn looked at her.

“My family?”

Linda smiled.

“Our family.”

She lifted the necklace and fastened it around Evelyn’s neck.

Her hands rested briefly on Evelyn’s shoulders.

“You are fortunate,” Linda whispered. “Most women would do anything for a husband like Ryan.”

Evelyn met her gaze in the mirror.

“Then perhaps he married the wrong woman.”

Linda’s smile disappeared.

May you like

Only for a second.

But Evelyn saw it.
