Chapter 7 - The Empire Begins to Fall
Victor and Celeste spent the night in separate interrogation rooms.
Both initially denied involvement.
Then detectives showed Celeste a still image from the garage recording.
She blamed Victor.
Victor claimed Celeste had misunderstood an innocent conversation.
Then investigators played the audio.
By sunrise, the Whitmore name was attached to an attempted murder investigation.
Harper remained in the hospital for two days.
Lydia stayed beside her while Northstar’s legal team secured corporate records and froze suspicious accounts.
The board of Whitmore Industries held an emergency meeting.
Victor’s allies attempted to delay the vote, but the company’s debt agreement contained a misconduct clause allowing Northstar Capital to remove financial authority from executives accused of fraud or violent criminal activity tied to corporate assets.
Harper joined the meeting by video from her hospital room.
A bruise darkened one side of her face, but her voice remained calm.
“For six years, Northstar Capital extended credit because thousands of employees depended on this company. That patience was rewarded with hidden losses, falsified invoices, and the misuse of company property in an attempt on my life.”
One director cleared his throat.
“Ms. Whitmore, calling the debt immediately could force bankruptcy.”
“Yes.”
“Then what are you proposing?”
“Victor Whitmore is removed. Every executive involved in financial misconduct is suspended. The company enters supervised restructuring under Northstar’s control.”
“And if the board refuses?”
Harper looked directly into the camera.
“Then the debt becomes payable today.”
The vote was unanimous.
Victor’s name was removed from the building before noon.
His office was sealed.
His private accounts were restricted.
The mansion, vehicles, and art collection were discovered to be collateral for multiple company loans.
Celeste learned through her attorney that nearly everything she considered hers belonged legally to corporations now controlled by Harper.
She called the hospital repeatedly.
Harper refused every call.
Connor visited on the second evening.
He stood awkwardly beside the bed.
“I should have seen what they were becoming.”
“You were sick, Connor.”
“That does not excuse everything.”
“No, but their choices belong to them.”
He sat in the chair.
“The police asked whether I knew about the plan.”
“What did you tell them?”
“The truth. I did not know. I never wanted your kidney after the doctors said it was dangerous.”
Harper watched him carefully.
“Do you believe me?” he asked.
“Yes.”
Connor’s shoulders dropped with relief.
“I am withdrawing from the company.”
“You do not have to.”
“I do. My entire position was built on their favoritism. I need to become someone without it.”
Harper reached for his hand.
“You are allowed to build a different life.”
