Chapter 6 - The Plan Changes
Harper regained awareness inside an ambulance.
She could not open her eyes, but she heard voices around her.
“Blood pressure stabilizing.”
“Possible concussion.”
“Minor head wound. No obvious internal bleeding.”
She tried to speak.
Nothing came out.
At the trauma unit, doctors confirmed that her injuries were serious but not life-threatening. She had a concussion, bruised ribs, a strained shoulder, and several small cuts.
The medical team gave her medication and placed her under observation.
Lydia was listed as her emergency representative, but the first call to Lydia failed because of the storm.
The hospital then contacted the family information listed in an older administrative file.
Victor and Celeste arrived before Lydia.
Harper heard her mother’s voice while drifting between sleep and consciousness.
“Is she awake?”
“Not fully,” the doctor said. “But her neurological signs are encouraging.”
“And the kidney?”
The doctor paused.
“What kidney?”
“Our son needs a transplant. Harper is compatible.”
“This is not an appropriate discussion.”
Victor stepped closer.
“If her condition worsens, we want immediate authorization.”
“You cannot authorize organ donation on behalf of an unconscious adult.”
“We are her parents.”
“She has a legal representative on file.”
Celeste’s tone sharpened.
“Then remove the representative.”
“That is not possible.”
Harper felt terror rising through the fog in her mind.
She tried to move.
Her fingers responded beneath the blanket.
Then she heard her mother say the sentence that destroyed the last fragile piece of hope she still held for them.
“Stop trying to save her. Give Connor the kidney.”
Victor checked his watch.
“She would consider it an honor.”
The doctor stepped away in disbelief.
“She is alive, and you have no authority to approve that.”
“She is a burden,” Celeste answered. “Our son is the future.”
Harper forced herself to remain still.
She needed to know how far they would go.
In the hallway, Officer Marcus Reed arrived with the first evidence recovered from the vehicle.
The brake line had not simply failed.
It had been deliberately cut and weakened.
He heard part of the conversation from the trauma room and immediately contacted hospital security.
At the same time, the collision alert reached the garage insurance server.
The system automatically uploaded the hidden recording.
Lydia received it while driving toward the hospital.
She listened once.
Then she called two attorneys, the hospital administrator, and the police.
By the time she reached the trauma-unit corridor, she knew exactly what Victor and Celeste had done.
She also knew Harper was conscious.
A nurse had reported movement beneath the blanket and a tear sliding from the corner of Harper’s closed eye.
Lydia entered the room and placed the medical directive on the bedside table.
Celeste demanded to know who she was.
Lydia gave the only answer that mattered.
“The person Harper appointed to make every medical decision.”

“You can open your eyes now.”
