Chapter 4 - The First Lie Collapses

Grant closed the hospital door behind him.
The latch clicked.
Claire stood.
“Mr. Caldwell.”
“Leave.”
“I’m assigned to this patient.”
“No, you aren’t.”
Claire did not move.
Grant looked at Amelia.
“Give me the phone.”
Amelia held it tighter.
“No.”
“Who gave it to you?”
“You already know.”
Grant looked at Claire.
“I said leave.”
Claire pressed the call button on her hospital badge.
Grant noticed.
His expression changed.
“You’re making this much worse.”
Amelia nearly laughed.
“For who?”
Grant stepped toward the bed.
“Amelia, listen to me.”
“No.”
“You have no idea what’s happening.”
“I know your business owes nearly six million dollars.”
He stopped.
Claire watched him carefully.
Amelia continued.
“I know the loan matures Friday.”
Grant stared at her.
“And I know you filed documents while I was unconscious.”
“You don’t understand.”
“Then explain.”
Grant dragged a hand across his mouth.
His posture changed.
Less threatening.
More desperate.
“Caldwell Medical Technologies was about to lose a major government contract.”
“That is not true.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I run the company.”
“You were eight months pregnant and working from home.”
“I attended every executive meeting.”
“You weren’t seeing the whole picture.”
“What whole picture requires stealing my house?”
“I wasn’t stealing anything.”
“What did you file?”
“Protection.”
“For who?”
“For us.”
Amelia stared at him.
“You and Vanessa?”
Grant flinched.
Claire glanced toward the door.
Grant lowered his voice.
“Vanessa has nothing to do with the finances.”
“She’s holding my son.”
“That was temporary.”
“She told me you said our marriage was over.”
“Because I needed her cooperative.”
Amelia almost could not believe what she was hearing.
“With what?”
Grant looked away.
That was enough.
Amelia understood Vanessa was involved in some part of the plan even if Vanessa herself did not yet know how much.
“Grant.”
His eyes returned to hers.
“What did you promise her?”
“Nothing.”
“Wrong answer.”
“Amelia.”
“What did you promise her?”
He said nothing.
Claire spoke.
“Security is coming.”
Grant turned on her.
“You think this hospital will protect you when my attorneys start asking why you illegally recorded private conversations?”
Claire remained calm.
“I recorded conduct in a patient care area after reporting suspected abuse.”
Grant’s face tightened.
“Delete it.”
“No.”
“Delete it.”
Amelia’s voice cut through the room.
“Touch her phone and I will scream loud enough for every person on this floor to hear.”
Grant looked at her.
For the first time, he saw that the sedation was no longer controlling the room.
Amelia was.
His shoulders dropped slightly.
“Fine.”
He moved toward the door.
Then Amelia asked, “Why was Vanessa wearing that robe?”
Grant stopped.
“What?”
“She came into my hospital room in a black robe over a dress.”
Silence.
Claire looked confused.
Amelia watched Grant carefully.
“Why?”
Grant’s jaw tightened.
“It doesn’t matter.”
“It matters to me.”
He opened the door.
Margaret stood outside.
She had apparently been listening.
Behind her was Vanessa.
Owen was no longer with her.
Amelia’s heart jumped.
“Where is my baby?”
Vanessa answered.
“Nursery.”
“Claire?”
Claire checked the hospital monitor.
She nodded.
“Owen was returned to the nursery twelve minutes ago.”
Amelia exhaled.
Margaret entered.
“This situation is becoming absurd.”
Amelia looked at her.
“You held my wrist while I was unconscious.”
Margaret’s face remained controlled.
“I prevented your hand from falling.”
“Onto a tablet?”
Margaret looked at Claire.
Claire did not blink.
Vanessa frowned.
“What tablet?”
Grant snapped, “Vanessa, stay out of this.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“You said she signed everything before surgery.”
Grant went still.
Amelia looked at Vanessa.
“What did he say I signed?”
Vanessa glanced between them.
Grant stepped forward.
“Don’t.”
Vanessa looked almost offended.
“You told me she agreed.”
“To what?” Amelia asked.
Vanessa’s confidence began to crack.
“That after the divorce, Grant would take over the house.”
Amelia’s mouth went dry.
“What divorce?”
Grant swore.
Vanessa continued, now looking directly at Grant.
“You said she wanted out.”
Amelia stared at her husband.
“You filed for divorce?”
“No.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
“You told me the papers were filed.”
Grant rounded on her.
“Stop talking.”
Vanessa stepped backward.
“You said she already signed.”
Amelia looked at Claire.
Claire’s expression confirmed what Amelia already knew.
Another forged document.
Amelia felt something colder than rage.
Clarity.
Grant had built different versions of reality for different people.
To the hospital, he was the devoted husband with emergency authority.
To Margaret, he was the son protecting family assets.
To Vanessa, he was the nearly divorced man preparing a new life.
To Amelia, he had been the worried husband beside the bed.
The plan depended on each woman remaining isolated.
Amelia decided that isolation ended now.
“Vanessa.”
Vanessa looked at her.
“How much money does Grant owe you?”
Grant immediately said, “Don’t answer.”
Vanessa’s eyes sharpened.
Amelia repeated, “How much?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“Two hundred thousand.”
Margaret gasped.
Grant stared at Vanessa.
“For what?” Amelia asked.
Vanessa’s voice was quieter.
“He said it was a bridge loan.”
Amelia looked at Grant.
Six million to a private lender.
Two hundred thousand to his mistress.
Unknown promises.
Unknown documents.

And somewhere beneath all of it was a name Amelia had not yet discovered.
A name belonging to a dead man.
