Chapter 13 - The Doctor’s Signature

Amelia felt betrayed before Rebecca explained.

Dr. Price had been her obstetrician for four years.

He had helped through two miscarriages.

He had called personally after each loss.

He had celebrated Owen’s heartbeat at eight weeks.

He had reassured Amelia when complications developed late in pregnancy.

The idea that he might have helped Grant was almost impossible to process.

“Did Samuel sign this?”

Rebecca said, “Yes.”

Amelia looked away.

Claire stood near the window.

Her expression was troubled.

“Why?”

Rebecca answered carefully.

“Not for the reason you think.”

Amelia looked back.

“Then tell me.”

“The document Dr. Price signed was not the document Grant submitted.”

Amelia frowned.

Rebecca placed two pages side by side.

The original hospital form stated:

Patient expected to experience temporary physical incapacity for approximately ninety days following complicated delivery.

The altered version stated:

Patient expected to experience physical and cognitive incapacity for approximately ninety days and is unable to make independent medical or financial decisions.

Amelia stared.

Two sentences changed everything.

“Grant altered it.”

“Yes.”

“Samuel?”

“Reported the discrepancy as soon as investigators contacted him.”

Amelia exhaled slowly.

Some part of the world returned to place.

But Rebecca was not finished.

“Dr. Price also confirmed something else.”

“What?”

“Grant asked whether additional sedation could be medically justified.”

Amelia went cold.

“What?”

Claire stepped forward.

“He asked me too.”

Amelia turned.

“When?”

“The morning after surgery.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I didn’t know whether it was significant until now.”

Rebecca said, “Dr. Price refused.”

Amelia looked at the documents.

“What exactly did Grant ask?”

Rebecca read from the interview notes.

Patient becomes agitated when discussing financial matters. Would extended sedation support recovery and reduce risk?

Amelia’s hands tightened.

“He wanted me unconscious longer.”

“Yes.”

“Could he have done it?”

“Not without a doctor.”

“Did anyone give me medication I didn’t need?”

Claire answered.

“We audited every administration. No.”

Amelia looked at her.

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

Relief came.

Then fury.

Grant had not merely taken advantage of her unconsciousness.

He had tried to extend it.

Rebecca closed the folder.

“This strengthens the coercion case.”

Amelia almost laughed.

“Coercion case.”

The phrase sounded too tidy for what he had done.

A knock came at the door.

Vanessa stood outside.

Amelia almost refused.

Then she saw Vanessa’s face.

“Come in.”

Vanessa entered.

She carried a small box.

“What is that?”

“Things Grant left at my apartment.”

Rebecca stood.

“Have investigators seen it?”

“Yes.”

Vanessa placed it on the table.

Inside were photographs.

Receipts.

A spare key.

And a baby bracelet.

Amelia recognized it immediately.

A hospital identification band.

Owen Caldwell.

She looked at Vanessa.

“Why do you have this?”

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“I didn’t know it was there.”

Amelia picked it up.

“Explain.”

“Grant gave me the box three days before your delivery.”

“For what?”

“He said if something went wrong, I should keep it.”

Amelia stared at the bracelet.

Three days before delivery.

Owen had not been born yet.

The bracelet should not have existed.

Claire took it carefully.

“This is not an issued band.”

“What?”

“It’s a duplicate template.”

Rebecca frowned.

“Could Grant have obtained one in advance?”

Claire looked disturbed.

“Not legitimately.”

Amelia closed her eyes.

The plan had started before the emergency.

Before her unconsciousness.

Before the complicated delivery.

Grant had prepared for an event he could not have known would happen.

Then a darker thought appeared.

“Did Grant cause the complications?”

Claire immediately said, “There is no evidence of that.”

Rebecca nodded.

“None.”

Amelia looked at them.

“But he was prepared.”

“Yes.”

Rebecca’s voice was careful.

“He appears to have planned for several possibilities surrounding your delivery.”

Vanessa sat down.

“He told me your doctor expected serious complications.”

Amelia’s eyes snapped to her.

“He knew I had risk factors.”

“He said there was a chance you wouldn’t survive.”

The room became silent.

Vanessa continued.

“He cried when he said it.”

Amelia’s stomach twisted.

“He told me if you died, he wanted me to help raise Owen.”

Amelia gripped the blanket.

“And if I lived?”

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“He said you would probably be too sick to care for him.”

Rebecca closed her eyes briefly.

Grant had built a plan with two acceptable outcomes.

Widower.

Or caretaker of an incapacitated wife.

Either way, he gained access.

Amelia looked at Owen’s false bracelet.

Then she did something she had not done since waking.

She smiled.

Not because anything was funny.

Because Grant had made one catastrophic mistake.

May you like

He planned everything around Amelia being weak.

He never planned for her recovery.
