Chapter 7 - The Secret Inside the SUVDavid remained silent during his arrest.

His confidence returned briefly when his attorney arrived at the hospital.
He claimed the shove had been an accident.
He claimed Emma had become unstable during pregnancy.
He claimed the documents in her bag were stolen business records she did not understand.
Then Detective Ortiz searched the black SUV.
The man in the parking lot was Carl Voss.
He had been attempting to remove a locked metal case from the rear compartment.
Inside the case, investigators found forged identification documents for David and more than eighty thousand dollars in cash. They also found two airline tickets scheduled for the following week.
One was in David’s name.
The other was for a woman named Vanessa Cole, the financial director of Mercer Strategic Holdings.
Emma knew the name.
Vanessa attended their wedding.
David had introduced her as an old family friend.
But the most important evidence was a folder marked Post-Event Instructions.
It contained directions for closing accounts, collecting the insurance payment, and transferring ownership of the remaining trust assets after Emma’s death.
There was also a draft statement David planned to give police.
It described Emma as depressed, confused, and frightened of motherhood.
He intended to claim she had caused her own fatal accident.
At the hospital, Dr. Patel entered Emma’s room with a reassuring smile.
“The baby is safe,” she said. “You have heavy bruising, but there is no sign of serious injury to her.”
Emma exhaled for what felt like the first time in hours.
“Can I go home?”
Dr. Patel hesitated.
“Do you have somewhere safe to go?”
Rachel stepped forward.
“She is coming with me.”
Emma looked at her old family friend.
“David owns the house.”
Rachel shook her head.
“No. The house was purchased through your trust. His ownership claim is based on forged documents.”
Detective Ortiz entered carrying a sealed evidence bag.
“We searched your home,” she said. “We recovered the original trust records and several computers.”
“Did you find the emails?”
“More than that.”
David had recorded many of his meetings with Carl, apparently because he did not trust his own accomplice.
In one audio file, David complained that Emma’s pregnancy complicated the timing of his plan.
In another, Carl asked whether David was certain about proceeding.
David’s recorded response was calm.
“She is worth more dead than divorced.”
Emma turned toward the window.
For years, she had wondered whether she was exaggerating his cruelty. David always told her she was sensitive, forgetful, and irrational.
Now his own voice confirmed the truth.
Detective Ortiz placed a card on the bedside table.
“You may receive calls from reporters. Do not answer questions until you speak with your attorney.”
“What will happen to him?”
“He is being charged with assault, identity theft, financial fraud, conspiracy, and several additional offenses. More charges may follow.”
Emma rested a hand on her stomach.
Her daughter moved beneath it.

For the first time, the movement did not feel like a warning.
It felt like a beginning.
