The Fourteen-Dollar Blanket / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6 - Wyatt Kane’s RuleWyatt Kane had managed the supermarket for nine years.

Before that, he had served fifteen years as a police officer.

He left the department after an injury, but he never lost the habit of watching hands, exits, and faces.

From the customer-service desk, he noticed David before the assault.

The man was not shopping normally. He watched his wife more than the shelves. Each time she moved several feet away, he repositioned himself to block the aisle.

Wyatt had seen controlling behavior before.

When David shoved Emma into the counter, Wyatt moved immediately.

After separating them, he noticed three details.

First, David demanded Emma’s bag instead of asking whether she was injured.

Second, David called someone and ordered them to prevent her from talking.

Third, the man on the other end answered loudly enough for Wyatt to hear one sentence:

“Then get her out before they search the car.”

That was why Wyatt activated the emergency lockdown.

David turned toward the exit as the doors closed.

“You cannot hold me here,” he said.

“I witnessed an assault,” Wyatt replied. “My security team can detain you until police arrive.”

“This is false imprisonment.”

“You’re free to explain that to the officers.”

David looked around.

Customers had taken out their phones.

The cashier, Nora, knelt beside Emma and spoke gently.

“Stay with me. The ambulance is almost here.”

Emma’s face had gone pale.

Wyatt removed his uniform jacket and folded it behind her head.

“Is the baby moving?” Nora asked.

“I don’t know,” Emma whispered.

Wyatt looked toward David.

For the first time, anger entered his voice.

“You should be on your knees asking whether they are alive.”

David said nothing.

One of the security officers approached Wyatt.

“There’s a man near the parking lot trying to open a black SUV,” he said quietly. “He doesn’t have keys. He keeps looking toward the store.”

Wyatt glanced through the front windows.

A man in a dark jacket stood beside David’s vehicle.

“Keep the doors locked,” Wyatt ordered. “Tell the responding officers.”

David heard him.

His face lost the last of its color.

The ambulance arrived first.

Paramedics entered through the controlled employee entrance and examined Emma. One of them attached a fetal monitor while another checked her blood pressure.

After several unbearable seconds, a rapid heartbeat filled the checkout area.

Emma began to cry.

“That’s your baby,” the paramedic said. “The heartbeat is strong, but we need to take you to the hospital.”

Emma held the leather bag against her chest.

“I need this with me.”

David stepped forward.

“That belongs to me.”

Wyatt blocked him again.

“No,” Emma said.

Her voice was weak, but everyone heard it.

“It belongs to me.”

Police officers entered moments later.

Detective Lena Ortiz arrived with them.

Rachel had already sent her the photographs Emma took inside the office.

Ortiz looked at David, then at the bag.

“Mrs. Mercer,” she said, “do you have evidence concerning financial fraud and a threat against your life?”

David’s mouth opened.

Emma reached into the bag.

She gave Ortiz the envelope and flash drive.

“Yes,” she replied. “And he knows I found it.”

Detective Ortiz turned toward David.

“David Mercer, put your hands behind your back.”

The entire checkout area watched as the handcuffs closed around his wrists.
