THE FOUR WORDS / Chapter 9 / 15

Chapter 9 - the price of silence

Leah took the phone from Chelsea.

“You will not threaten her daughter.”

Richard laughed softly.

“There you are.”

“You locked us beneath the house.”

“I have no idea what you mean.”

“We recovered the suitcase.”

Silence.

Leah knew she had struck the correct target.

“What suitcase?” Richard asked.

“The one containing Rose’s records.”

Chelsea looked terrified.

Richard’s voice hardened.

“Bring it to me.”

“No.”

“Then you are choosing to place every member of this family in danger.”

“You are the danger.”

“You have always needed a villain, Leah. First it was me. Then your mother. Then Chelsea. Now you have found a dead nurse and built a story around her.”

“I heard Elias’s recording.”

Another silence.

“Audio can be fabricated.”

“Can Daniel’s photograph?”

Richard ended the call.

Margaret returned from the bedroom.

“We need to move Maisie.”

“Where?”

“A secured apartment owned by the trust.”

“No property connected to the trust is safe.”

Margaret considered this.

“Then we use somewhere Richard would never expect.”

Chelsea looked up.

“My former husband’s house.”

Leah stared at her.

“You trust him?”

“No. But he hates my father.”

An hour later, they arrived at the home of Owen Price, Chelsea’s former husband.

Sophie opened the door.

She ran past Chelsea and hugged Maisie as though they had known each other for years.

“You came!”

Maisie looked surprised.

Sophie whispered, “Mom showed me your picture.”

Owen listened while Leah and Margaret explained enough to establish the threat. He did not ask for financial details.

When Chelsea told him about Richard’s custody threat, his expression became cold.

“You believed he could take Sophie because he paid my debts?”

“He said you would cooperate.”

“I took his money because I knew he would try to use it.”

Chelsea blinked.

“What?”

Owen unlocked a cabinet and removed a recording device.

“Every conversation I had with Richard was recorded.”

“You never told me.”

“You never asked whether I was fighting him. You assumed I had become him.”

Chelsea lowered her eyes.

Owen handed the device to Margaret.

In one recording, Richard offered to erase Owen’s business debts in exchange for temporary control of Sophie’s custody.

In another, he instructed Owen to prevent Sophie from attending Christmas dinner.

“The trust distinguishes between biological descendants and legally recognized children,” Margaret said after listening. “Richard wanted Sophie absent because her presence may complicate the beneficiary structure.”

“Why?” Owen asked.

Margaret looked at Chelsea.

“Because Chelsea may not be Elias’s biological granddaughter.”

The room became silent.

Chelsea laughed once.

“That’s ridiculous.”

Margaret opened a scanned family record from the H-2 suitcase.

“Elias investigated the births of both Leah and Chelsea after discovering Richard had altered hospital documents.”

Leah felt the story shift again.

“My birth too?”

“Yes.”

“Why would he do that?”

“We do not know yet.”

Chelsea shook her head.

“Dad is my father.”

“No one is questioning that,” Margaret said. “The uncertainty concerns Richard’s parentage.”

Leah frowned.

“Richard may not have been Grandpa Elias’s biological son?”

“Correct.”

Owen leaned against the wall.

“So the man obsessed with blood may not possess the bloodline he worships.”

Chelsea looked toward Sophie and Maisie, who were decorating cookies in the kitchen.

“Does Dad know?”

Margaret closed the file.

“I believe that is the secret he has spent decades protecting.”

Leah remembered the four words written on the sealed envelope she had not yet seen.

A thought entered her mind.

“What if the trust was never designed to preserve the Hale bloodline?”

Margaret met her eyes.

“Then we have misunderstood Elias’s purpose.”

That night, after the children fell asleep, Leah opened the laptop from the suitcase.

Most files required a password.

One folder did not.

It was titled THE FOUR WORDS.

Inside was a single video.

The image showed Elias Hale seated in his study.

He looked directly into the camera and said, “Richard is not my son.”
