THE FOUR WORDS / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13 - the beneficiary page

Leah helped Maisie stand.

The child’s question silenced the room.

“Mom… am I not family?”

Richard pointed toward the door.

“That seat is for my real grandchild.”

The words were recorded by his own camera.

They were heard by board members, relatives, trustees and every beneficiary required under Elias’s instructions.

Margaret checked the time.

“The rejection condition is satisfied.”

Richard seemed to understand too late.

Leah pulled the blue folder from her purse.

“Then explain this trust.”

Diane saw the beneficiary page and dropped her wine.

The glass shattered across the floor.

“Where did you get that?” she whispered.

“From Grandpa’s attorney.”

Richard declared the document false.

Margaret ordered him to sit down.

Leah faced the table.

“Grandpa left me everything.”

The statement produced exactly the chaos Richard had expected, but not for the reason he had planned.

Relatives demanded evidence.

Chelsea locked the dining-room doors, not to trap anyone, but to prevent Richard’s security team from removing documents.

Charles Benton called an emergency board session.

Margaret distributed copies of the court order.

Richard tried to take Maisie by the arm.

Leah stepped between them.

“Touch her and the recording is sent to every shareholder.”

His hand dropped.

“She is manipulating you,” he told the room. “Leah has always resented this family.”

“No,” Chelsea said. “She survived it.”

Richard looked at his younger daughter as though he no longer recognized her.

“You would choose her over me?”

“I’m choosing Sophie.”

Chelsea placed Owen’s recordings on the table.

“And I’m choosing the truth.”

Diane stood next.

She described the altered hospital records, the threats against Rose and the night Richard told her a child would never be found.

Richard’s face became gray.

“You have no proof.”

Leah placed the suitcase documents beside the candles.

“We have Rose’s copies.”

Richard looked toward the doors.

Margaret noticed.

“The exits are secured by court officers,” she said.

“You brought police into my home?”

“The trust’s home.”

Richard turned toward the relatives.

“My father was ill. Mercer controlled him. Leah has been planning this for years.”

Leah played Elias’s video.

Her grandfather’s face appeared on the dining-room screen.

Richard is not my son.

The relatives reacted with confusion, but Elias’s next words stopped them.

Biology did not make Richard less my child. I chose him.

Richard stared at the screen.

For one instant, the fury left his face. Leah saw the wounded boy Elias had described.

Then Elias continued.

Richard’s crimes were not caused by his birth. They were choices made by a man who valued ownership more than love.

Richard picked up a wine bottle and hurled it at the screen.

It struck the wall and broke.

The video continued through the speakers.

Leah proved herself when she chose a child without demanding blood, wealth or advantage.

Richard covered his ears.

“Turn it off.”

No one obeyed.

I therefore appoint Leah Anne Hale as conditional controlling trustee.

Charles Benton’s phone rang.

He listened briefly, then addressed the table.

“The court authorization has been verified. Richard Hale is suspended from all company authority effective immediately.”

Richard staggered back.

“No.”

“Company accounts are frozen pending investigation,” Charles added.

“You cannot do this.”

“The trust can.”

Richard looked at Leah.

“You planned to humiliate me.”

“I planned to protect my daughter.”

“You took everything.”

“No. Grandpa removed what you were misusing.”

Richard’s expression turned desperate.

“What do you want?”

Leah thought of the years she had wanted an apology. She thought of Christmases spent wondering why her father could not love her without demanding obedience.

Now that he was asking the question, she wanted nothing from him.

“I want you to stay away from Maisie, Sophie, Chelsea and me.”

“You need me.”

“No.”

The answer seemed to strike him harder than any accusation.

Another sealed page slipped from the blue folder and landed near his feet.

May you like

Four words were written across the front.

Richard saw them and turned pale.
