THE FOLDER UNDER HIS JACKET / Chapter 7 / 15

Chapter 7 - Behind the Pantry Wall

Mara refused to allow Amy and Connor to return to the house until additional officers secured it.

The two officers originally assigned there were found inside their patrol vehicle several blocks away. They were unharmed but disoriented after drinking coffee delivered by someone wearing a catering uniform.

Security footage from a nearby house showed a service van arriving at Amy’s property fifteen minutes later.

By the time backup entered the house, the kitchen had been searched.

Cabinets stood open.

Birthday decorations had been torn down.

The documents left behind were gone.

The pantry wall, however, appeared untouched.

Mara took Amy to the house shortly after midnight while Connor remained at the hospital with the children. Ryan stayed in custody.

The kitchen looked colder without the balloons.

The cake had collapsed where someone stepped on it. Pink frosting stained the floor near the table.

Amy stopped at the sink.

For months, she had felt like a guest in the house Evelyn left her. Now even her fear had been replaced by anger.

“This ends here,” she said.

Mara checked the pantry.

“Show me the compartment.”

Amy removed three wooden shelves and pressed a hidden latch beneath the lowest bracket. A narrow panel released from the wall.

Inside was a metal box, a cassette recorder, and an envelope bearing Amy’s name.

The box was locked.

The key had been taped to the underside of the cassette recorder.

Mara photographed everything before Amy opened it.

Inside were two birth certificates, a photograph, a silver locket, and a handwritten ledger.

The first birth certificate was the one Amy had always known. It listed Rose Ward as her mother and left the father’s name blank.

The second was certified by the state.

It listed Rose Evelyn Ward as the mother.

It listed Malcolm Adrian Vale as the father.

Amy sat on the pantry floor.

Mara crouched beside her.

“Are you all right?”

“No.”

She looked at the old photograph.

Rose stood beside Malcolm near the lake. Rose’s expression was tense, while Malcolm smiled toward the camera.

On the back, Evelyn had written:

The day Rose learned what he had done.

Amy opened the ledger.

It contained dates, payments, and names. Some entries referred to hospital administrators. Others listed court clerks, notaries, insurance agents, and employees at Meridian National Bank.

Malcolm had spent years building access to systems that created legal identities.

One line appeared repeatedly.

PROJECT WINTER.

The earliest entry was dated three months before Amy’s birth.

Mara pointed to the cassette recorder.

“We need to hear that.”

The tape began with static.

Then Evelyn’s voice filled the pantry.

“Amy, if you are listening to this, Malcolm has found a way around the protections I left for you.”

Amy pressed one hand to her mouth.

“I told you your mother abandoned you because the truth would have placed you in greater danger. Rose discovered Malcolm was using hospital records to create false deaths and inheritances. She tried to expose him. Before she could, he threatened to take you.”

The recording paused.

Evelyn sounded older and more frightened when she continued.

“Rose did not leave you. I made her disappear.”

Amy closed her eyes.

“She agreed because it was the only way to keep you alive. Malcolm believes she died twenty-four years ago. He must never learn otherwise.”

Mara stopped the tape.

“Your mother may be alive.”

Amy looked at the second birth certificate.

“If she is, the trust amendment sends everything to her.”

“Unless Malcolm controls her legal identity.”

They continued the recording.

Evelyn described a secure deposit box held under the name Winter Rose. It contained the original trust documents and proof of Malcolm’s criminal network.

Then she said something that made Mara rewind the tape.

“Do not go to the police until you know which officer answers to him.”

The detective’s expression tightened.

Amy looked toward the kitchen.

“Someone knew we were coming.”

A floorboard creaked in the hallway.

Mara reached for her weapon and moved in front of Amy.

A shadow crossed the pantry doorway.

The man who stepped into view wore a police uniform.

Amy recognized him.

He was the same officer who had blocked Ryan at the birthday table.
