THE FOLDER UNDER HIS JACKET / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15 - The File Marked After Amy Dies

They waited until the children were asleep before opening the memory card.

Mara joined them at the house, along with Ross and a federal investigator named Samuel Grant. Rose sat at the dining table with both hands around a cup of tea.

Connor inserted the card into an offline computer.

Six folders appeared.

The first contained recordings of Malcolm instructing Teresa to isolate Amy, disconnect the security system, and prepare the abandonment story.

The second contained financial records linking Malcolm to the lenders that had nearly destroyed Connor’s company.

The third held hospital access logs and payments to administrators.

The fourth contained surveillance photographs of Amy from childhood to adulthood.

The fifth was labeled THOMAS.

Connor opened it.

A video began.

Thomas Hayes sat in a dim room with a newspaper dated three weeks earlier. His hair was white, and exhaustion had changed his face, but Connor recognized him instantly.

“Connor,” Thomas said, “if you are seeing this, Malcolm has activated Project Winter.”

Connor moved closer to the screen.

“I left because I helped Evelyn hide Rose. Malcolm threatened to create criminal records under your name and take you from Teresa. I believed disappearing was the only way to protect you.”

Connor’s expression hardened.

Thomas continued.

“I was wrong. Absence does not protect a child. It only leaves someone else to explain why you never came home.”

Rose lowered her eyes.

“I have spent years collecting evidence. Malcolm discovered me before I could deliver it. He now believes I work for him.”

The video shifted as Thomas looked toward a sound outside the room.

“There is something Evelyn never told Amy. Something Rose may not know.”

Rose looked up sharply.

Thomas faced the camera again.

“Malcolm Vale is named on Amy’s birth certificate, but he may not be her biological father.”

Amy stopped breathing.

“Evelyn altered the original record before Malcolm could see it. The true certificate is hidden in a place called North House.”

The video ended.

Connor looked through the remaining files.

The sixth folder was locked.

Its title read:

AFTER AMY DIES.

Samuel Grant attempted to open it.

The system requested a password.

Rose stood.

“North House.”

Amy looked at her.

“You know what it is?”

“It was Evelyn’s childhood home near the Canadian border. She told me it burned down before you were born.”

Mara searched property records.

“No fire was ever reported.”

Ross checked satellite images.

A house still stood on the land.

It was registered to a private company created by Malcolm Vale.

Samuel typed NORTH HOUSE into the password field.

The folder opened.

It contained only one video file.

The timestamp showed it had been recorded that morning.

Connor pressed play.

A live camera view appeared.

Snow covered the ground around an isolated house surrounded by pine trees. A black vehicle was parked beside the porch.

The front door opened.

Malcolm Vale stepped outside.

He looked directly into the camera as if he knew they were watching.

Then Thomas appeared behind him with his hands free.

The two men did not look like enemies.

They looked like partners.

Malcolm smiled.

“Congratulations, Amy. You survived your death.”

Thomas placed a thick blue file on the porch railing.

Malcolm continued.

“You found your mother. You recovered your house. You exposed the documents I intended you to expose.”

Mara leaned toward the screen.

“Intended?”

Malcolm’s smile widened.

“The death certificate was never the end of Project Winter. It was the invitation.”

Behind Amy, Rose dropped her cup.

The video showed a third person walking out of North House.

A woman.

She was younger than Rose, with Amy’s eyes and Evelyn’s silver locket around her neck.

Amy touched the identical locket she had recovered from the pantry wall.

The woman stepped beside Thomas.

Malcolm rested a hand on the blue file.

“Come to North House, Amy, and you will learn why Evelyn raised you under another woman’s name.”

Rose shook her head.

“No. Do not listen to him.”

On the screen, the unknown woman moved closer to the camera.

“Amy,” she said, “Rose Ward is not your mother.”

Amy looked at Rose.

Rose’s face had gone completely white.

The woman continued.

“She was supposed to protect you until I could return.”

Connor closed the laptop, but the audio continued through the speakers.

Malcolm’s final words filled the dining room.

“You have seventy-two hours before the world learns who you really are.”

The screen went black.

Then Amy’s phone rang.

The caller identification showed her own name.

AMY HAYES.

She answered without speaking.

A child’s voice whispered from the other end.

“Mommy, he found me.”

Amy looked toward the upstairs hallway.

Lily and Noah were asleep in their rooms.

Connor ran toward the stairs.

Mara traced the call.

The signal did not come from North House.

It came from inside Amy’s property.

The lights outside went dark one by one.

At the edge of the garden, the door to Evelyn’s old greenhouse slowly opened.

And someone carrying a blue file stepped into the house.
