Chapter 12 - The House of Glass

Police asked Sarah to remain below.
She refused to enter the penthouse first, but she refused to hide from what happened there. She rode the elevator with Naomi and waited behind the protected line while officers opened the door.
The rooms appeared empty. City lights reflected in every window. A half-packed suitcase lay in the hall. Drawers had been pulled open, and the blue velvet box from Sarah's lunch bag rested on the dining table.
The hidden service elevator stood behind the wine wall. Its doors were open.
Julian sat in the library beside the prototype server. He wore no jacket or tie. Sarah's biometric ring hung from a chain around his neck.
"I am unarmed," he told the officers. "I asked to speak to my wife."
Naomi objected, but Sarah stepped where he could see her. Police remained between them.
Julian looked at her shaved head for a long time.
"I did not know Victoria would go that far," he said.
"You held me still."
"I panicked. The transfer was processing. I needed you out of the office for ten minutes."
"So you let her punish me for arriving early."
"I made one unforgivable choice."
Sarah glanced at the stolen ring, the server, and the open suitcase. "You made hundreds of choices. You only dislike the final result."
He leaned forward. "Aurelius is bigger than North Quay. My father built accounts across six countries. If the prosecutors take me, whoever controls those accounts will move against the company. I can help you find them."
"Who controls them?"
"Give me safe passage first."
Naomi almost laughed. "You are negotiating from a room surrounded by police."
"I am negotiating with Sarah. She understands what Sterling Vantage is worth."
Sarah did understand. That was why she could see the offer clearly. Julian still believed the company justified anything. Theft, forgery, cruelty, and now escape. He expected her to become like him in order to save what they had built.
"Tell me one thing," she said. "When did you decide I was your enemy?"
His expression softened. "You were never my enemy. You were the door. I needed what was behind you."
The honesty struck harder than another lie.
"And Victoria?"
"A tool that believed it was a partner."
A sound came from the hallway.
Victoria stood beyond the police line with her attorney and two investigators. She had been brought to identify Julian's second phone. She heard every word.
Julian saw her and closed his eyes briefly.
"There," Victoria said. "That is the man I destroyed myself for."
She directed police to a false bottom in Julian's suitcase. Inside they found the original unsigned share agreement, two passports under different names, the second phone, and a memory device containing Aurelius account numbers.
Julian's last confidence disappeared.
An officer removed the biometric ring from his neck. Another informed him that he was under arrest on charges related to fraud, unlawful access, evidence tampering, and conspiracy. Additional charges would follow.
As they led him toward the door, he looked at Sarah.
"If you let them take me, you will never know who sent the message to Evelyn."
"Perhaps not," Sarah said.
"You need me."
She thought of the lunch she had prepared, the old brass key, and every year she had spent keeping him warm while he searched for a way to own her fire.
"I needed the man you pretended to be," she said. "He was never real."
Julian was taken away.
Victoria followed under separate custody. At the door, she stopped beside Sarah.
"For what it is worth, I am sorry."
"It is worth the truth you tell when no bargain remains," Sarah answered. "We will see what that is."
When the penthouse was finally quiet, Sarah opened the blue velvet box. The brass key was gone. In its place lay Julian's wedding ring and a folded note.
Sarah expected an apology.
May you like
The note contained an address, a date three days in the future, and a warning written in Julian's hand.
Do not open Arthur's vault unless you are ready to learn why he chose you.
