THE FIRST RECORD / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13 - The First Arrest

The second record appeared behind Preston.

Not the false $12 million account.

The original Bennett Meridian transfer.

$4.8 million.

Halcyon Events and Development.

Authorized by Preston Hale.

The ballroom erupted in whispers.

Preston wiped cake from his face.

“That is fabricated.”

The lead federal agent displayed her badge.

“We recovered the original authorization from Hale Capital’s secured servers.”

Charles Hale was not in the ballroom.

Evelyn was not in the ballroom.

But three Halcyon directors were seated among the guests.

Agents moved toward them.

One tried to stand.

Another reached for his phone.

Both were stopped.

Daniel approached his brother.

“You used my signature.”

Preston smiled through the frosting.

“You gave it to me.”

“I trusted you.”

“That was your mistake.”

The same sentence Evelyn had used.

Daniel’s face hardened.

“You planned to frame Sophie.”

“I planned to save the company from you.”

“You stole from Ruth.”

“Ruth’s company exists because her husband stole first.”

Ruth opened her handbag and removed the sealed document.

“This is the forensic audit,” she said. “Every transfer, every shell company, every false vendor.”

Preston looked at the envelope.

His expression shifted.

He had expected accusations.

He had not expected a completed audit.

Sophie raised the microphone.

“Before they arrest anyone, explain why my mother’s company paid for this wedding.”

Preston looked toward the locked doors.

An agent approached him.

“Preston Hale, you are being detained in connection with wire fraud, identity theft, conspiracy, obstruction, and destruction of evidence.”

Preston lifted his hands.

“You have no idea who you’re protecting.”

The agent reached for him.

At that moment, Charles tried to remove the flash drive from the wedding planner’s laptop.

He had entered disguised as a hotel technician.

An agent seized his wrist.

Charles’s cap fell away.

Daniel stared at his father.

“You came back.”

Charles looked at him without affection.

“You ruined everything.”

The projector flickered.

A photograph appeared.

Marcus outside the private airfield.

Ruth whispered his name.

Charles looked toward the screen.

For the first time, genuine fear crossed his face.

“That file should not exist.”

Aaron stepped forward.

“It survived your archive fire.”

Preston looked at Charles.

“You said the servers were destroyed.”

“They were.”

“Then who copied it?”

Every eye in the ballroom turned toward Celeste.

She stood beside the cake table.

Preston’s face twisted.

“You.”

Celeste’s hands trembled, but she did not look away.

“My brother was discharged from your clinic this morning. Federal protection moved him somewhere you can’t reach.”

Preston took one step toward her.

Agents restrained him.

He began shouting.

“You think this ends with me? You think the first record belongs to Marcus Bennett?”

Ruth moved closer.

“What does that mean?”

Preston laughed.

“The first record existed before Marcus touched Northstar.”

“Who created it?” Sophie demanded.

Preston looked at her.

“Ask your mother.”

Ruth’s face went pale.

“That is enough,” Charles said.

Preston ignored him.

“Ask her what she was doing the night account 5821 opened.”

“I was home with my daughter,” Ruth said.

“No.”

Preston’s smile became cruel.

“You were at the Hale estate.”

Daniel turned toward Ruth.

Sophie waited for her mother to deny it.

Ruth said nothing.

Charles closed his eyes.

The agents led Preston and Charles toward the doors.

As Preston passed Sophie, he leaned close enough for only her to hear.

“Your mother’s signature was real.”

Then he was taken away.
