Chapter 11 - The Father in the Bridal Suite

Sophie could not move.

Marcus remained near the window, keeping several feet between them.

His hair was gray at the temples. A thin scar crossed his jaw. He looked both familiar and completely unknown.

“You’re alive,” Sophie whispered.

“Yes.”

“My mother buried an empty coffin.”

“I know.”

“She waited for you.”

Pain moved across his face.

“I know.”

Sophie’s shock became anger.

“You don’t get to say that.”

“No.”

“You don’t get to stand here after eighteen years and tell me what I should do.”

“No.”

“Then explain.”

Marcus glanced toward the ceiling.

“They’re listening.”

“Yes.”

“Federal agents?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

He raised both hands slowly to show he carried no weapon.

“My name is Marcus Bennett. I am prepared to surrender documents related to Northstar Civic Systems, Hale Capital, and the theft from Bennett Meridian.”

Aaron’s voice came through a concealed speaker.

“Place any documents on the table and step away.”

Marcus removed a slim encrypted drive from inside his coat.

He placed it beside the flowers.

Sophie stared at him.

“Did you steal the $71 million?”

“No.”

“Did you authorize the recent withdrawal?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To pay people who kept me alive.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“It’s the answer I can prove.”

“Were you working with Charles?”

“For a time.”

“Were you working with Preston?”

“No.”

“Did you write 5821 inside the ring box?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To lead Ruth to the account.”

“You could have called.”

“I tried once.”

“Eighteen years ago.”

Marcus lowered his gaze.

“After that call, Charles found me.”

“What did he do?”

“He gave me a choice. Disappear permanently or watch Northstar accuse Ruth of helping me steal classified funds.”

“So you abandoned us.”

“I believed I was saving you.”

Sophie laughed without humor.

“That sentence must be popular with parents.”

Marcus accepted the accusation.

“Charles moved me between private facilities for almost three years. When I escaped, Northstar had collapsed, but the network behind it was still active. Some of those people entered Hale Capital. Some entered Bennett Meridian.”

Ruth’s company.

Sophie felt sick.

“Who?”

“I don’t know all of them.”

“Then what is on the drive?”

“The first record and every transaction I traced afterward.”

“Does it prove Preston stole from us?”

“Yes.”

“Does it prove Charles helped?”

“Yes.”

“Does it prove my mother was innocent?”

Marcus looked directly at her.

“It proves Ruth signed one agreement.”

Sophie’s chest tightened.

“She said the signature was forged.”

“The signature on the transfer was forged.”

“What agreement did she sign?”

Marcus hesitated.

The bridal-suite door opened.

Federal agents entered, followed by Aaron and Ruth.

Ruth stopped when she saw Marcus.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Eighteen years seemed to fill the space between them.

Marcus’s voice broke first.

“I’m sorry.”

Ruth walked toward him.

Sophie expected tears.

Instead, Ruth struck him across the face.

The sound was sharp but not violent enough to move him.

Marcus did not defend himself.

“That,” Ruth said, “was for letting our daughter believe you were dead.”

She struck him again.

“That was for making me doubt my own memory.”

She raised her hand a third time.

Then stopped.

Her fingers trembled.

Marcus whispered, “I deserved more.”

Ruth lowered her hand.

“What agreement?”

Marcus looked at Sophie.

“The agreement that created account 5821.”

Ruth’s expression changed.

“I never signed it.”

“You signed a blank emergency authorization the night before my flight.”

“You said it was for payroll.”

“I know.”

Ruth stared at him.

“You used me.”

“I was trying to protect the money from Northstar.”

“You put my name on stolen funds.”

“I documented the source.”

“You disappeared before explaining.”

“I did not plan the crash.”

“But you planned everything else.”

An agent collected the drive.

Aaron’s phone rang.

He listened for several seconds.

Then he looked toward Daniel.

“We have a problem.”

“What happened?”

“Preston just transferred another $12 million.”

“From where?” Sophie asked.

Aaron’s expression darkened.

“From the account holding the wedding payments.”

May you like

“Where did it go?”

“To an account in Sophie’s name.”
