THE FILE THEY NEVER EXPECTED / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5 - Camera Seven

The memory card would not open on Lucas’s phone.

Rachel arrived twenty minutes later carrying a laptop, two portable drives and the expression of someone who had already discovered more than she wanted to know.

She was in her early forties, with dark hair pulled into a low knot and a long gray coat damp from the rain.

She greeted Sophia first.

“I am Rachel Quinn. Lucas asked me to help protect you and Emma.”

Sophia looked at Lucas before nodding.

Rachel noticed.

“No one will ask you to sign anything tonight,” she said. “You decide what happens next.”

Some tension left Sophia’s shoulders.

Rachel connected the memory card to her laptop.

Several video files appeared.

Most were short recordings from a hospital hallway camera.

The date matched the night after Emma’s birth.

In the first video, Evelyn and Natalie stood outside room 417 with Dr. Keller. There was no audio, but their movements were clear.

Keller handed Evelyn a folder.

Natalie entered the room.

Three minutes later, she returned holding Sophia’s phone.

Evelyn placed the phone inside her handbag.

In the second recording, Sophia appeared in the doorway wearing a hospital gown and gripping the frame for support.

She was speaking rapidly.

Natalie pushed the door closed from the hallway.

The lock indicator changed from green to red.

Lucas looked away from the screen.

Rachel paused the video.

“Sophia, do you want us to continue?”

“Yes.”

The third recording showed a nurse carrying a medication tray toward the room.

Keller stopped her.

He pointed at a document and directed her back toward the nurses’ station.

Minutes later, Evelyn entered the room.

The fourth recording was different.

It came from a camera angle facing a service corridor.

A hospital orderly in green scrubs approached camera seven and looked directly into the lens. He held up a handwritten sign.

THE RECORDS ARE BEING CHANGED.

The orderly lowered the sign and placed something beneath the door of a storage closet.

Rachel stopped the video.

“Do you know him?” she asked Dr. Reyes.

“Samuel Grant. Night transport team.”

“Can we speak with him?”

Dr. Reyes called the staffing office.

Her expression changed as she listened.

“What happened?” Lucas asked.

“He was dismissed this morning.”

“Why?”

“They claim he accessed restricted patient information.”

Rachel asked for Samuel’s contact details.

The hospital refused.

She made two calls and found a residential address through an emergency licensing database.

Detective Cruz and Hale had not yet arrived, so Rachel sent the information to a private investigator she trusted.

Then she opened the final video file.

The timestamp showed 2:14 in the morning.

Evelyn stood outside room 417 with a woman in a white coat.

The woman’s face was turned away from the camera.

Keller joined them.

He handed the woman an electronic tablet.

She signed something.

Evelyn looked directly at camera seven.

Then she pointed toward it.

The recording ended.

Rachel enlarged the final frame.

The woman’s badge was partly visible.

Only the last letters of her name could be read.

RCER.

Mercer.

Lucas stared at the frozen image.

“Arthur Mercer did not have a daughter,” he said.

“Are you certain?” Rachel asked.

“My father talked about him all the time. Arthur never married.”

Sophia spoke softly.

“Maybe Mercer is not her last name.”

Rachel opened the metadata attached to the video.

The files had been copied shortly before Samuel Grant’s dismissal. The original recordings were now listed as deleted from the hospital archive.

Someone had preserved the only remaining evidence.

Lucas looked at the memory card.

“Samuel knew they would erase it.”

“He also knew how to get it into this room,” Rachel said.

Dr. Reyes walked toward the window.

“Samuel transported Sophia from recovery after surgery. He may have heard something.”

Rachel’s phone rang.

The private investigator had located Samuel’s apartment.

The door was open.

The lights were on.

No one was inside.

There were signs he had left quickly, but his wallet and car remained behind.

On the kitchen table, the investigator found a hospital envelope with Rachel’s name written across the front.

“He knew who you were?” Lucas asked.

“I have never met him.”

Rachel instructed the investigator to photograph the envelope before opening it.

Inside were copies of altered treatment logs, email printouts and a handwritten note.

Rachel read the note aloud.

I do not know who is controlling Keller. They used Dr. Reyes’s access to delay the infant’s care. The mother was never unstable. I copied everything I could. If I disappear, search the hospital transfer scheduled for midnight. The destination does not exist.

Dr. Reyes checked Emma’s chart.

“There is no transfer order.”

Rachel leaned over her shoulder.

“Look outside the active record.”

The doctor searched the archived scheduling section.

A transport request appeared under a temporary reference number.

Emma and Sophia were scheduled to leave St. Catherine at 12:05 a.m.

Destination: Mercer Pediatric Recovery Center.

Dr. Reyes searched the medical directory.

“No facility exists under that name.”

Lucas checked the time.

11:17 p.m.

“Where were they planning to take them?”

Rachel studied the transfer authorization.

The approving physician was Jonathan Keller.

The requesting guardian was Natalie Hart.

The receiving official was listed only by an identification code.

AM-417.

Rachel’s face became still.

“What is it?” Lucas asked.

She turned the laptop.

The same code appeared on Lucas’s canceled deployment leave.

Someone outside the hospital had authorized both actions.

At that moment, the lights went out.

Emma’s monitor switched to emergency power.

The hallway beyond the door became completely dark.

Then someone tried to unlock room 417 from the outside.
