Chapter 2 - The Locked Hospital Room

Lucas left the base before sunset.

Captain Ward did not officially authorize the departure. He simply placed Lucas’s travel documents on the desk and walked out of the room.

Three hours later, Lucas boarded a military transport heading west.

During the flight, he called every number connected to St. Catherine Medical Center.

The maternity desk said Sophia was not registered.

The emergency department claimed there was no patient under her name.

The billing office found her account, then abruptly transferred the call to hospital administration.

A man introduced himself as Dr. Jonathan Keller, the executive medical director.

“Your wife has requested privacy,” Keller said.

“My wife sent me a message asking for help.”

“Patients say many things while recovering from childbirth.”

“Let me speak to her doctor.”

“I cannot disclose that information.”

“I am her husband.”

“There is a temporary legal guardian listed.”

Lucas gripped the phone.

“Who?”

Keller paused.

“Your sister, Natalie Hart.”

Lucas nearly stood from his seat.

“My sister has no legal authority over my wife.”

“The documents on file say otherwise.”

“Who verified them?”

“That matter is being handled properly.”

Lucas heard another voice in Keller’s office.

A woman asked, “Has he been delayed?”

Keller covered the phone, but not quickly enough.

Lucas recognized the voice.

His mother.

The call disconnected.

When the transport landed, Lucas took a taxi directly to the hospital.

Rain covered the city in silver sheets. The streets reflected red brake lights and white hospital signs as the vehicle moved through the evening traffic.

Lucas entered St. Catherine through the main lobby.

He wore civilian clothes now, but his military identification remained in his pocket.

At the reception desk, a nurse searched for Sophia’s name.

Her expression tightened.

“I’m sorry. That patient has restricted access.”

“I’m her husband.”

“I understand, but the privacy order is very specific.”

“Who placed it?”

The nurse looked over her shoulder toward the security station.

Lucas followed her gaze.

Two guards were watching him.

He lowered his voice.

“My wife gave birth early. My newborn daughter is somewhere in this building. I have not spoken to either of them. Please tell me the room number.”

The nurse’s face softened.

Before she could respond, an administrator approached.

“Mr. Hart?”

He was tall, gray-haired and dressed in an expensive suit beneath his white coat.

Dr. Jonathan Keller.

“You need to leave,” Keller said.

“I need to see my family.”

“Your wife has requested no contact.”

“Let me hear her say it.”

“That will not be possible.”

Lucas stepped closer.

“Then you had better call the police, because I am not leaving without confirming that she is safe.”

The guards moved toward him.

Before they arrived, a woman in blue scrubs emerged from the elevator.

She looked from Lucas to Keller.

“Is there a problem?”

Keller’s posture changed.

“Dr. Reyes, return to your floor.”

The doctor ignored him.

Her gaze settled on Lucas.

“Are you Sophia Hart’s husband?”

“Yes.”

Something moved across her face.

Relief.

Then caution.

“I need to speak with you privately.”

Keller stepped between them.

“That will not be necessary.”

Dr. Reyes looked directly at him.

“She asked for her husband repeatedly.”

“She is under a temporary guardianship order.”

“I know what the chart says.”

“Then follow it.”

The doctor’s voice remained calm.

“I also know the baby’s treatment was interrupted without my approval.”

Keller’s eyes hardened.

Lucas felt every sound in the lobby disappear.

“What treatment?” he asked.

Dr. Reyes did not answer in front of Keller.

Instead, she turned toward the elevator.

“Come with me.”

One guard reached for Lucas’s arm.

Dr. Reyes faced him.

“If you prevent this child’s father from entering the neonatal floor, put your name and your medical justification in the chart.”

The guard stopped.

Keller’s face turned red.

“You are risking your position.”

Dr. Reyes pressed the elevator button.

“No. I am protecting my patient.”

The doors opened.

Lucas entered with her.

As the elevator rose, Dr. Reyes watched the floor numbers instead of looking at him.

“Your daughter was born five days ago,” she said. “Her name in the chart is Emma Sophia Hart.”

Lucas closed his eyes briefly.

Sophia had chosen the name they discussed before he deployed.

“Is she alive?”

“Yes.”

The elevator seemed to pause between floors.

“Is she safe?”

Dr. Reyes finally looked at him.

“She was improving. Then someone withdrew consent for the medication plan.”

“Who?”

“Your sister signed the refusal.”

Lucas’s hands curled into fists.

“She cannot do that.”

“She presented a guardianship authorization and a medical power of attorney.”

“They are fake.”

“I suspected that.”

“Why did you follow them?”

Pain crossed the doctor’s expression.

“I did not. But my orders were replaced during the night shift. By the time I discovered it, the treatment had already been delayed.”

The elevator opened onto a quiet maternity corridor.

Dr. Reyes led him past the nurses’ station to a room guarded by another security officer.

The door had no patient name.

Only a number.

The guard stood.

Dr. Reyes showed her badge.

“This is the child’s father.”

“I was told he was not permitted.”

“By whom?”

“Administration.”

She held out her hand.

“Then call administration and tell them I overruled it.”

The guard hesitated, then stepped aside.

Lucas opened the door.

Sophia lay in bed beneath a white blanket.

For one terrible second, he thought she was asleep.

Then her eyes opened.

“Lucas?”

He crossed the room before she finished saying his name.

Sophia reached for him with both hands. He held her carefully, afraid of causing pain, afraid she might disappear if he loosened his grip.

“You came,” she whispered.

“I’m here.”

“They told me you chose not to come.”

Lucas pulled back enough to look at her.

“Who told you that?”

His mother’s voice answered from the corner.

“I did.”

Evelyn rose from a chair beside the bassinet.

Natalie stood behind her.

Between them, Emma began to cry.
