THE FIFTH LAWYER / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15 - The Door Opens Again

Claire stood frozen.

Margaret walked toward the estate.

No weapon.

No guards.

Just a calm expression.

Daniel remained several yards behind her.

Ray stood farther away.

Nobody spoke.

Margaret stopped beneath the broken doorway.

"Claire."

Claire held Elizabeth's hand.

"You're the controller."

Margaret smiled.

"That is what your grandfather wanted you to believe."

Claire's grandfather stepped forward.

"Enough."

Margaret looked at him.

"You should have stayed dead."

Claire turned sharply.

"Why?"

Margaret smiled.

"Because everyone is easier to control when they believe the story."

Claire looked at her grandfather.

"You knew."

He nodded.

"I knew Margaret was involved."

Margaret laughed.

"Not involved."

She pointed toward the Parker estate.

"I built the system."

Claire's eyes narrowed.

"What system?"

"The Parker family was never the owner."

She looked at Daniel.

"Your father was only the administrator."

Then at Ray.

"Your father was only the successor."

Then at Patricia.

"Your mother was only the guardian."

Finally, she looked at Claire.

"And you were only the contingency."

Claire's heart pounded.

"Contingency for what?"

Margaret stepped closer.

"For the day the Parker bloodline collapsed."

Elizabeth whispered, "And then?"

Margaret looked at her.

"Then the company returns to its original owner."

Claire understood.

"Your family."

Margaret nodded.

"No."

She shook her head.

"Not my family."

She reached into her coat.

She removed a document.

"The original Parker family ended decades ago."

Claire stared.

"Then who owns it?"

Margaret smiled.

"That is what you have been trying to discover."

She handed the document to Claire.

Claire opened it.

The first page contained one sentence.

Parker Holdings shall never belong to a Parker.

Claire turned the page.

Her hands began trembling.

The final page contained a signature.

Claire knew the handwriting.

It belonged to her grandfather.

But the date was impossible.

The document had been signed tomorrow.

Claire looked up.

"How?"

Margaret's smile disappeared.

"Because the final transfer hasn't happened yet."

Daniel suddenly shouted.

"Claire, don't sign anything!"

Ray moved toward him.

Patricia screamed.

Tyler ran from the building.

Everything erupted at once.

Claire looked down at the document.

At the bottom was an empty signature line.

Her name was already typed beneath it.

Claire Parker.

She looked at Margaret.

"You brought me here to sign."

Margaret nodded.

"Yes."

"And if I do?"

"You will finally learn who owns everything."

Claire stared at the page.

Then she slowly smiled.

"No."

Margaret's expression hardened.

Claire tore the signature page in half.

Everyone froze.

Margaret whispered, "You don't understand."

Claire dropped the pieces.

"I understand perfectly."

She looked at Daniel.

Then Ray.

Then Patricia.

Then her grandfather.

"You all spent eleven years trying to decide who controlled me."

She took one step forward.

"But none of you noticed something."

Margaret frowned.

"What?"

Claire reached into her uniform pocket.

She removed the original black-sealed letter from her grandfather.

The one that had started everything.

"I never signed the first document."

Margaret's face changed.

Claire continued.

"So the second will was never activated."

Silence.

Howard's voice came from behind the crowd.

"She's right."

Everyone turned.

Howard stepped forward.

He held another document.

"The transfer is invalid."

Margaret stared at him.

"No."

Howard looked at Claire.

"Because the fifth attorney never authorized the activation."

Claire looked at Margaret.

Margaret's face became unreadable.

Then she smiled.

"Very clever."

Claire narrowed her eyes.

"You knew."

Margaret nodded.

"I knew you would figure it out."

"Then why?"

Margaret looked toward the road.

"Because I wanted you to."

Claire's expression changed.

Margaret turned.

A convoy of black vehicles was approaching.

She stepped aside.

The first vehicle stopped.

The rear door opened.

A man stepped out.

Claire had never seen him before.

But everyone else reacted.

Ray went pale.

Patricia stopped breathing.

Daniel lowered his head.

Claire's grandfather whispered one sentence.

"No."

The stranger walked toward them.

He looked at Claire.

Then smiled.

"Hello, Claire."

Claire stared.

"Who are you?"

He looked toward the Parker family.

"The man your grandfather betrayed."

Claire felt the world go silent.

He held out a sealed envelope.

"Your grandfather told you to find the truth."

Claire did not take it.

The stranger smiled.

"But he never told you what the truth would cost."

He placed the envelope on the ground.

Then he walked away.

Claire waited until his car disappeared.

Only then did she pick up the envelope.

There was no name on it.

Only three words.

OPEN WHEN READY.

Claire looked at Daniel.

"What's inside?"

Daniel's face was filled with fear.

"I don't know."

Claire looked at her grandfather.

He whispered:

"Yes, you do."

Claire stared at the envelope.

Then she opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

Claire's hands went cold.

The photograph showed her mother.

Her father.

Daniel.

Her grandfather.

Margaret.

And one more person standing between them.

A person Claire recognized immediately.

Because that person had been standing beside her only minutes earlier.

Claire slowly raised her eyes.

Elizabeth was gone.

The estate gates slammed shut.

A phone began ringing somewhere inside the house.

Claire looked toward the dark windows.

Then at the photograph.

The final message appeared on the back.

Your family was never protecting you.

They were protecting you from me.

Claire heard footsteps behind her.

She turned.

Nobody was there.

Then the phone inside the abandoned estate rang again.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Claire stepped toward the door.

Daniel shouted her name.

She stopped.

He looked terrified.

"Claire, don't answer it."

She stared at him.

"Why?"

Daniel whispered:

"Because the last person who answered that phone disappeared for twenty years."

The phone rang again.

Claire looked at the dark doorway.

Then slowly reached for the handle.

The door opened by itself.

And from somewhere inside the house, a woman's voice whispered:

"Claire..."

She froze.

The voice continued.

May you like

"You finally came home."

CUT TO BLACK.
