THE FIFTH LAWYER / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 - The Door

The door handle began to turn.

For three seconds, nobody in the Parker dining room moved.

Five estate lawyers sat around the polished marble table, their legal folders open beneath the warm chandelier light. Patricia Parker stood at the head of the table with her arms folded tightly across her cream dress. Ray remained behind Claire's chair, his expression hard and unreadable. Tyler's earlier smirk had vanished.

Claire Parker stood several feet away in her blue military dress uniform.

She looked completely calm.

The door opened.

A man stepped inside.

He was tall, silver haired, and dressed in a dark navy suit. He carried no briefcase. He did not look at Patricia, Ray, or Tyler.

He looked directly at Claire.

Then he said one sentence.

"You are late, Captain Parker."

Claire's eyes narrowed.

"I was delayed."

The man's gaze moved toward the five lawyers.

"Good. Then we still have time."

Patricia's face drained of color.

Ray took one step forward.

"Who are you?"

The stranger ignored him.

Instead, he reached inside his jacket and removed a sealed envelope.

Claire recognized the seal immediately.

It was the Parker family crest.

Her expression changed for the first time that evening.

"Where did you get that?"

The man placed the envelope on the nearest table.

"Your grandfather gave it to me twenty years ago."

Tyler stared at him.

"My grandfather has been dead for eleven years."

"I know."

Silence filled the room.

Patricia suddenly stepped forward.

"This is private family property. You need to leave."

The stranger finally looked at her.

"No, Patricia."

He said her name with such certainty that she stopped.

"I think you need to sit down."

Patricia did not move.

The stranger pointed toward the five lawyers.

"And I think all of them need to listen."

One lawyer quietly closed his folder.

Another removed his glasses.

Claire walked toward the envelope.

Before she could touch it, Patricia spoke.

"Claire, don't."

Claire stopped.

Patricia's voice was no longer commanding.

It was afraid.

Claire turned slowly.

"Why?"

Patricia swallowed.

"Because your grandfather never left anything for you."

Claire looked at the envelope.

Then back at Patricia.

"That's not what he told me."

Tyler's face tightened.

"What did he tell you?"

Claire did not answer.

The stranger did.

"He told her the truth."

Ray's fist tightened at his side.

"What truth?"

The stranger smiled faintly.

"The truth your family has spent eleven years trying to bury."

He slid the envelope across the table.

Claire picked it up.

Her name was written across the front in her grandfather's unmistakable handwriting.

Captain Claire Parker.

Not Claire.

Not granddaughter.

Captain Claire Parker.

She turned the envelope over.

There was another seal.

A black wax seal.

One of the lawyers suddenly stood.

"That's impossible."

Claire looked at him.

"Why?"

The lawyer's face had gone pale.

"Because that seal belonged to an agreement that was supposed to have been destroyed."

Patricia closed her eyes.

Tyler whispered, "Mom..."

Claire broke the seal.

Inside was a single handwritten page.

She read the first line.

Then the second.

Her breathing stopped.

The stranger watched her carefully.

"What does it say?"

Claire slowly raised her eyes.

"It says my grandfather knew he was being betrayed."

Patricia whispered, "Claire..."

Claire continued reading.

"And he knew exactly who would do it."

The room became completely silent.

Claire looked at the five lawyers.

Then at Ray.

Then Tyler.

Finally, she looked at Patricia.

"Grandfather left instructions."

Patricia shook her head.

"No."

Claire's voice remained quiet.

"He named a successor."

Patricia stepped backward.

"No."

Claire looked down at the final line.

Her eyes widened.

Because the name written there was not hers.

It was the name of someone nobody in the room expected to see.

And beneath that name was a second sentence.

If Claire Parker is forced to sign away her inheritance, activate the fifth attorney.

Claire looked toward the doorway.

The stranger smiled.

"Now you understand why I knocked."

One of the five lawyers whispered, "There is no fifth attorney."

The stranger turned toward him.

"That's where you're wrong."

He reached into his jacket again.

This time, he removed an old photograph.

He placed it on the table.

Five lawyers leaned forward.

Patricia refused to look.

Claire picked up the photograph.

There were six people standing outside an old Parker estate.

Her grandfather.

Patricia.

Ray.

A younger version of the five lawyers.

And one final person.

Claire stared.

She knew that face.

Everyone did.

Because the person in the photograph had officially died twenty years ago.

Claire slowly lowered the photograph.

"How is this possible?"

The stranger answered softly.

"That's the question your grandfather wanted you to ask."

Behind them, one of the lawyers suddenly locked the dining room door.

Claire noticed.

Her hand tightened around the photograph.

The stranger noticed too.

"Claire."

She looked at him.

"Don't trust anyone in this room."

The lights suddenly flickered.

Then the entire mansion went dark.
