Chapter 9 - The Mother Who Chose the Experiment

The chamber beneath the river laboratory had once stored chemical tanks. Pike had transformed it into a crude operating suite with surgical lamps, monitors, refrigerated medications, and a portable perfusion machine.
Daniel Cross sat restrained but conscious. Bruising darkened one temple. When he saw Elias through Noah's phone screen, accidentally lit during the struggle, his face tightened with confusion.
Vanessa pointed her weapon at Noah while Pike secured the outer door.
"You should have come willingly," she said. "This would have been cleaner."
"You poisoned Richard to force him toward me," Noah replied.
"Richard was already dying. I accelerated a conclusion."
Pike removed his coat. Beneath it, he wore a medical support belt and had the pale, dry skin of advanced renal disease. Noah noticed a tremor in his fingers and a dialysis access scar at his neck.
"You need a transplant now," Noah said.
"Tonight," Pike answered.
"And you believe you can remove my kidney in this room and survive?"
"I have performed harder procedures under worse conditions."
"On patients who consented."
Pike smiled faintly. "Consent is a social luxury. Biology is older."
Daniel pulled against the restraints. "Why bring me?"
Vanessa looked at him as if he were an object on a shelf. "Your tissue proves the Mercer line and Avery line were mixed. We needed to know which donor profile Noah truly carries."
Noah understood. They had not yet confirmed his identity. Pike was willing to cut into both men to find out.
"Malcolm told you that suffering made you special," Noah said to Pike. "He needed you to believe that because otherwise you would see what he did to you."
For the first time, anger crossed Pike's face.
"He saved me."
"He experimented on you."
"He gave me purpose."
"He gave you a cage and taught you to call it destiny."
Vanessa struck Noah across the face with the pistol. "Do not speak about his father."
Pike turned sharply. "You said Malcolm was not my father."
Silence followed.
Vanessa's certainty cracked. Noah saw it and pressed.
"Richard said Malcolm was your father. Did he lie?"
"Richard lies when he breathes," Vanessa said.
Pike stepped toward her. "Who was my father?"
Outside, faintly, came the sound of metal against concrete. Lena's team had reached the tunnel.
Vanessa raised the weapon toward the door. "There is no time. Sedate Noah."
Pike did not move.
"Who was my father?"
Vanessa's eyes filled, not with tenderness, but frustration. "Malcolm selected the best available genetic material. The donor's identity was irrelevant."
Pike went still.
The man who had built his life around inheritance discovered he was not a son at all. He was a product assembled from records Vanessa had never cared to preserve.
Noah spoke quietly. "She chose the experiment, Samuel. She is still choosing it."
Vanessa fired.
Pike jerked backward, blood spreading across his shoulder. Daniel threw himself sideways, overturning the chair. Noah lunged. The second shot struck a surgical lamp. Darkness swallowed half the room.
Noah tackled Vanessa against the perfusion machine. Her gun slid beneath a cabinet. Pike, wounded, reached for a scalpel. For one terrible instant Noah thought he would attack.
Instead Pike cut Daniel's restraints.
The outer door exploded inward. Federal agents entered. Vanessa grabbed a syringe from the instrument tray and drove it toward Noah's neck. Sarah's voice rang from the corridor.
"Noah!"
He turned just enough. The needle struck his coat rather than skin. Lena seized Vanessa's wrist and forced her down.
Pike collapsed beside the table.
Noah moved to him automatically.
"Do not," Pike whispered. "You are not my doctor."
"Tonight I am."
The bullet had passed through soft tissue, but Pike's blood pressure was dangerously low and his heart rhythm unstable from kidney failure. Noah compressed the wound and ordered the agents to bring the medical kit.
Vanessa, handcuffed on the floor, laughed.
"Save him," she said. "That is what you were made for."
Noah looked at her.
"No," he said. "It is what I chose to become."
Pike survived transport to St. Catherine. Daniel was taken to another hospital under protection. Richard returned to intensive care.
By morning, Vanessa was in federal custody and news of the Voss network began to break.
Then the pathology lab called.

The specimen labeled P-1 did not match Pike.
It matched Noah and Daniel equally, with a pattern possible only between identical twins.
