Chapter 12 - The Son Who Refused to Trade a Mother

Sarah was not in her bedroom when police arrived.
The photograph had been taken earlier, possibly weeks before. Her house was empty, the alarm intact, and no sign of forced entry. Her phone lay on the kitchen table beside a cup of tea still warm.
Noah found one drop of blood near the back door.
For the first time since the lobby confrontation, his control disappeared. He struck the doorframe hard enough to split the skin across his knuckles.
Daniel caught his arm before he hit it again.
"They want you unable to think," Daniel said.
"They have my mother."
"Then think better than they expect."
The word mother no longer belonged only to Noah in Daniel's voice. Sarah had sat with Daniel through his first night after learning his identity. She had called Claire, explained what trauma could do to memory, and told Daniel he did not have to choose between his past and his family. He had begun trusting her too.
Lena analyzed the message. Its signal bounced through several countries, but the photograph metadata had been preserved deliberately. It pointed to North Harbor Island.
"They want us there," she said. "The location is not a mistake."
Noah read the demand again. Bring the twins.
"Who sent it?"
Pike was under armed guard. Vanessa was in federal custody. Richard could barely walk without assistance. Yet the Continuity database showed recent access under a user called Founder.
Malcolm Voss had supposedly died twelve years earlier, but his body had never been recovered after the boating accident.
Adrian rejected the possibility. "I identified his blood on the boat."
"Blood is not a body," Lena said.
Pike asked to speak with Noah after learning Sarah had vanished.
"There was one person Vanessa feared," he said. "A man she referred to as the Founder even after Malcolm died. I assumed it was a title she used to control the network."
"Could Malcolm be alive?"
Pike's face betrayed something close to childhood fear. "If he is, do not go to the island."
"You kidnapped Daniel and prepared to cut out my kidney. Why should your warning matter?"
"Because I learned cruelty from him, and I am telling you I never learned all of it."
Noah and Daniel agreed to cooperate with Lena's plan. They would appear to approach the island alone while tactical teams entered through submerged maintenance tunnels identified in old blueprints. Both men wore concealed transmitters. A helicopter remained beyond radar range.
Before leaving, Noah visited Richard.
"Sarah has been taken," he said.
Richard looked genuinely alarmed. "Vanessa would not hurt her."
"You still think you know what Vanessa would do?"
Richard turned away. "There is a room on the island called the Family Theater. Malcolm used it for loyalty tests. He made guardians choose between children, medicine, money, and their own safety."
"How do we reach it?"
"Through the chapel. There is a stair beneath the altar."
Noah paused at the door.
Richard said, "Bring her back."
"You do not get to ask me for that as if we are family."
"I know."
It was the first answer Richard gave that did not defend himself.
The twins crossed North Harbor in a small motorboat under a moonless sky. Daniel handled the wheel. Wind cut across the water. The quarantine station rose ahead, a dark mass of stone and steel, one tower lit at the top.
"Were you afraid in the storm?" Daniel asked.
Noah knew which storm.
"I thought I had done something wrong."
Daniel nodded. "That is what children believe when adults hurt them. It gives the world an order. A terrible order, but an order."
"What did you believe?"
"That I had no family because I was unfinished."
Noah looked at him. "You have a family."
"So do you. That is why we are going to get her."
They entered through the chapel doors. Dust covered the pews, but fresh footprints crossed the aisle. At the altar, Noah found a brass plate stamped with the split compass. The key marked 14 opened it.
A staircase descended into white light.
At the bottom, Sarah sat behind glass, awake and uninjured. A speaker clicked overhead.
A man's voice, old but powerful, filled the chamber.
"Welcome home, Noah and Nathan Avery."
Daniel stiffened.
Nathan.
His original name.
May you like
The voice continued.
"One of you has spent a lifetime healing. The other has spent a lifetime pretending. Tonight we discover which son was worth saving."
