Chapter 14 - the trap inside the Hale estate

Mark did not call the number.
He forwarded the message to the police and immediately contacted Rachel’s sister.
She answered on the first ring.
Ava was safe.
The photograph had been taken less than ten minutes earlier, but no intruder had been found. A window in the upstairs hallway stood open.
Rachel’s sister took Ava to a secured police location.
Mark’s fear became something sharper.
Claire had entered Ava’s school.
Robert’s home.
Hale Meridian headquarters.
Now she had entered a guarded residence.
She had access no ordinary investigator could obtain.
Marianne refused to remain at the hospital.
“She will keep threatening Ava until she gets the phone,” she said.
“Then the phone stays with the police,” Mark replied.
“You do not understand her.”
“Tell me who she is.”
Marianne looked toward the officers outside the room.
“Her name is Victoria Shaw.”
Mark recognized it.
Victoria had served as Margaret’s executive assistant during the company’s early years. Official records stated that she died in a house fire twenty-five years ago.
“That’s impossible.”
Marianne shook her head.
“Robert helped her disappear.”
“Why?”
“Because she helped him take control of my shares.”
Mark struggled to understand.
“Why would she return now?”
“She never left.”
Marianne explained that Victoria managed Robert’s secret network: investigators, private clinics, shell companies, and compromised employees. She collected information that could destroy people, then used it to secure their silence.
Robert depended on her.
But he also feared her.
“Elena discovered Victoria was transferring money from Robert’s hidden accounts,” Marianne said. “She was not protecting him anymore. She was building something for herself.”
“What?”
“I don’t know.”
Mark thought of Claire’s message.
Bring me Elena’s phone.
Whatever Victoria wanted, the damaged device contained it.
Late that afternoon, forensic technicians recovered part of the phone’s storage.
There were financial files, photographs, and seventeen audio recordings.
The first sixteen were corrupted.
The seventeenth contained eight seconds of Elena’s voice.
“Mark, if you are hearing this, Robert knows about Marianne. Do not trust the person who brings you the blue file.”
The recording ended.
Rachel frowned.
“What blue file?”
Mark remembered the metal case Jessica had given Victoria.
There had been financial records, an old phone, and a flash drive.
No blue file.
Daniel arrived with news from the Hale estate.
Mrs. Alvarez had found a document hidden beneath Margaret’s old writing desk.
A blue folder.
The estate was still being searched by police.
Mark, Rachel, Daniel, and Marianne returned under protection.
The dining room looked almost exactly as it had after the confrontation. The broken glass had been removed, but the wine stain remained across the floor.
Robert’s chair stood empty.
Mrs. Alvarez waited in Margaret’s old study.
She handed Mark the blue folder.
“I found it beneath a false panel.”
Marianne stepped back.
“Elena said not to trust the person who brings it.”
Mrs. Alvarez’s face filled with alarm.
“I did not know.”
Mark did not open the folder.
Rachel placed it inside an evidence bag.
A sound came from the hallway.
One of the officers called out.
They ran toward the dining room.
Robert stood beside the glass table.
His suit was dirty, and a bruise darkened his temple. He held no weapon.
Mark stopped in the doorway.
“Where have you been?”
Robert looked at Marianne.
For the first time, his expression contained something resembling regret.
“Victoria took me.”
Marianne laughed bitterly.
“You expect us to believe you are her victim?”
“She has Elena’s original evidence.”
“No,” Mark said. “She wants Elena’s phone.”
Robert looked at the evidence bag in Rachel’s hand.
His face changed when he saw the blue folder.
“Do not open that.”
“Why?”
“Because it is not a file.”
Daniel moved closer.
“What is it?”
Robert glanced at the tall windows.
The daylight was fading.
“It is a signal.”
Every light in the estate went out.
The security alarms failed.
A recorded voice began playing through the house speakers.
May you like
Elena’s voice.
“Mark, take Ava and run.”
