Chapter 13 - what Elena left behind

Claire disappeared before the police reached the property.
The black car was found abandoned three miles away. The plates had been stolen, the interior wiped clean, and the security system remotely disabled.
But Marianne remained.
Dr. Cole claimed she had been admitted voluntarily under a different name.
The documents told another story.
For twenty-seven years, Robert had controlled her finances, communication, treatment, and legal identity through a series of guardianship orders.
Several signatures appeared to be forged.
Others belonged to doctors who no longer practiced or could not be located.
Marianne was transferred to a secure hospital for independent evaluation.
Robert was removed as her guardian before midnight.
Mark sat beside her in a quiet visitor room.
She held a cup of tea with both hands.
“You were five when I left home,” she said.
“I barely remember you.”
“You called me Mari.”
A memory surfaced.
A girl lifting him onto a piano bench.
A blue ribbon tied around her wrist.
Robert shouting from the doorway.
“Why did he send you away?”
Marianne looked toward the window.
“Mother gave me shares after discovering that Robert had used company funds to create private accounts. She wanted me to help expose him.”
“You were a teenager.”
“I was nineteen. I believed I could fight him.”
“What happened?”
“He found a doctor willing to call my fear a delusion. He said I was unstable. Mother tried to reverse the guardianship, but Robert threatened to take you from her.”
Mark thought of Ava.
The same method.
The same threat.
“He used me against her.”
Marianne nodded.
“Mother continued visiting secretly. She promised she would free me.”
“But she died.”
“Robert told me her heart failed. I never saw a death certificate.”
“She had a stroke.”
“After an argument with him?”
Mark did not know.
Robert had said Margaret collapsed alone in her study.
Now every family tragedy looked different.
“Elena found you,” he said.
Marianne’s expression softened.
“She came here pretending to review insurance contracts. She recognized my name in an old payment ledger.”
“Did she speak to you?”
“Several times.”
“What did she discover?”
“That the false property expenses were paying for this facility, private investigators, and people who protected Robert’s guardianship orders.”
“Did she know about the forged signatures?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t she tell me?”
“She wanted proof first. She believed Robert would attack your fitness as a father even before Ava was born.”
Mark looked down.
Elena had been protecting him.
Just as Ava had tried to protect him by hiding Jessica’s cruel words.
“What happened the night she died?”
Marianne placed the tea on the table.
“She came to see me.”
“Here?”
“Yes. She had copied the original guardianship file and financial records. She said she was taking them to a federal investigator.”
“Who knew?”
“Robert.”
“Anyone else?”
Marianne looked frightened.
“The woman in the blue coat.”
“Claire?”
“That is not her name.”
“What is it?”
Before Marianne could answer, Rachel entered.
She carried a sealed evidence bag.
“The police found this inside the wall of Marianne’s old room.”
Inside was an outdated mobile phone.
Marianne began to cry.
“Elena’s phone.”
Mark stood.
“The police report said her phone was destroyed in the accident.”
“She left this one with me,” Marianne said. “She said it contained a copy of everything.”
The device would not turn on.
Rachel planned to send it to a forensic laboratory.
Marianne gripped Mark’s hand.
“There may be a message for you.”
“Did she record one?”
“She recorded many. She was afraid she would not reach the investigator.”
Mark closed his eyes.
For six years, he had lived with unanswered questions. Now Elena’s voice might be waiting inside a damaged phone.
Rachel placed another document on the table.
It was an arrest warrant.
“For Robert?” Mark asked.
“For fraud, obstruction, unlawful surveillance, and suspected coercion. More charges may follow.”
Mark felt no triumph.
Only exhaustion.
“Where is he?”
“He disappeared before officers reached the estate.”
Daniel called moments later.
Robert’s private plane had not left the airport.
His vehicles remained at the house.
His phone had been found on the dining table beside the broken wine glass.
Robert had vanished without using any account, car, or device the police could trace.
Then Mark received a message from an unknown number.
It contained a photograph of Ava sleeping safely in Rachel’s sister’s guest room.
The photograph had been taken from inside the house.

Beneath it were four words.
Bring me Elena’s phone.
