Chapter 9 - Everything They Lost

The investigation lasted six months.
Vivian was charged with fraud, conspiracy, destruction of medical records, and attempted manipulation of a protected family trust. The clinic director admitted accepting money from the Ashford Foundation to alter Grant’s files.
Celeste cooperated with prosecutors in exchange for a reduced sentence. Her marriage to Grant was annulled.
Clara Bell testified and entered a restitution agreement. She received no house, but Marcus helped connect her with a legitimate debt-relief program after she accepted responsibility for her part in the scheme.
The Ashford board removed Vivian from every leadership position.
Grant lost control of the family foundation temporarily while investigators reviewed years of transactions. Several business partners withdrew. Newspapers published photographs of him kneeling beneath the white floral arch as Evelyn held the fake belly above the crowd.
For the first time in his life, Grant could not purchase silence.
He visited Evelyn’s cottage one evening.
She allowed him to sit on the porch but did not invite him inside.
“I was wrong,” he said.
“That covers many things.”
“I was wrong about you. About Celeste. About my mother.”
“And Lily?”
Grant looked through the window, where Lily played with wooden blocks.
“I abandoned her.”
“Yes.”
“I thought providing money was enough.”
“It wasn’t.”
“I want to fix it.”
Evelyn studied him.
“You cannot fix what happened by feeling guilty. You can only decide what kind of father you will be from now on.”
Grant nodded.
“I’ll do anything.”
“No. You’ll do the consistent things. You’ll arrive when you promise. You’ll learn what she likes. You’ll sit with her when she is sick. You’ll remember that she is not less valuable because she is a girl.”
Grant’s eyes filled with tears.
“I understand.”
“You’re beginning to.”
Evelyn gave him a supervised visitation schedule prepared by her attorney.
Grant accepted it without argument.
Before leaving, he asked, “Did you know the truth before the wedding?”
“For months.”
“Why didn’t you tell me privately?”
“I tried to make you ask questions. You called me jealous.”
Grant lowered his eyes.
May you like
“You needed to see the lie in the same place you planned to reward it.”
He could not disagree.
