Chapter 11 - Born on Blackwood Lake

Rain hammered the boat as Julian pushed the engine to its limit.
Thomas lay unconscious on the floor while Charles pressed his hands against the gunshot wound.
“He has a pulse,” Charles said. “But we need a hospital now.”
Sophia gripped the side of the boat.
The contractions came less than three minutes apart.
Maya knelt beside her.
“We may not reach the road in time.”
“No. He’s too early.”
“I know.”
Gabriel held a flashlight while Eleanor, pale from blood loss, removed her coat and placed it beneath Sophia’s head.
Sophia looked at her.
“You’re hurt.”
“So are you.”
The boat struck a wave.
Sophia cried out.
Maya checked the baby’s position.
“I can see his head.”
Fear overwhelmed Sophia.
“Please don’t let him die.”
Maya took her hand.
“Listen to me. Your son is fighting. You need to fight with him.”
Another gunshot sounded from the shore.
Marcus had taken a second boat.
Its headlights appeared across the lake.
“He’s following us,” Julian said.
Gabriel picked up the pistol Charles had taken from one of the attackers.
“How many rounds?”
“Three,” Charles replied.
Sophia could not focus on the chase.
Her body had taken control.
She pushed while the storm raged around them.
Maya guided her.
Eleanor held her shoulders.
Charles tried to keep Thomas alive.
Gabriel fired once toward Marcus’s boat.
The shot missed.
Marcus’s boat moved closer.
“You cannot escape the trust!” his voice carried across the water.
Sophia screamed as the baby emerged.
For one terrible second, there was no sound.
Maya lifted the small child into her arms.
He was tiny.
Too still.
“Why isn’t he crying?”
Maya cleared his airway.
“Come on.”
Sophia reached toward him.
“Please.”
Maya rubbed his back.
The baby released a faint cry.
Then another.
Sophia began sobbing.
Eleanor wrapped him carefully in her coat.
“He’s alive.”
Sophia held her son against her chest.
The world narrowed to his tiny face.
His eyes remained closed.
His hand curled around her finger.
“My son,” she whispered.
A bullet struck the side of the boat.
Julian shouted.
Fuel began leaking from the engine.
“We’re losing power.”
The far shore remained several hundred yards away.
Gabriel aimed again.
Marcus stood behind the wheel of the pursuing boat.
Gabriel’s finger tightened around the trigger.
Then Vanessa appeared beside Marcus.
Her injured arm was strapped against her body.
Marcus held a gun against her head.
Gabriel lowered the weapon.
“How did he get her?” Sophia asked.
Charles stared in disbelief.
“She was under police protection.”
Marcus smiled across the water.
“Return the child, or Vanessa dies.”
Gabriel’s face became rigid.
Vanessa looked toward him.
For the first time, brother and sister saw each other knowing the truth.
Vanessa shouted, “Don’t give him the baby.”
Marcus struck her.
Gabriel raised the gun.
Vanessa shook her head.
“If you shoot, he’ll turn the wheel.”
Marcus’s boat was moving directly toward them.
If its driver fell, it could crash into Sophia’s boat and kill everyone.
Eleanor forced herself to stand.
“Marcus.”
He looked at her.
“You were never the Guardian,” she called. “You were only my father’s servant.”
His face changed.
“You know nothing.”
“I know why he chose you. Because you obeyed.”
Marcus’s attention shifted entirely to her.
Eleanor continued.
“He never respected you. He gave you Vanessa because he knew you could not create an heir of your own.”
Marcus’s grip tightened around the pistol.
“You abandoned your daughters.”
“And you stole one because no woman would give you a child willingly.”
Marcus fired.
The bullet struck Eleanor.
She fell backward into Charles’s arms.
Gabriel fired at Marcus’s engine.
The fuel tank exploded.
Flames rose behind Vanessa.
She jumped into the lake.
Marcus disappeared beneath the fire.
Julian turned their damaged boat toward her.
Gabriel dove into the water.
He reached Vanessa seconds before the burning boat sank.
Together, Julian and Charles pulled them aboard.
Vanessa coughed violently.
Gabriel held her.
“You’re safe.”
She looked at him through wet hair.
“I don’t know you.”
“I know.”
“But you came back.”
“You’re my sister.”
Sophia watched them while holding her newborn son.
Behind them, Eleanor struggled to breathe.
Charles pressed his hands against the bullet wound.
“Stay with me.”
Eleanor looked at Sophia.
“Do not let them name him.”
Sophia frowned.
“What?”
“The trust records every heir through the name.”
Her voice weakened.
“Choose a name they cannot predict.”
Sophia looked down at her son.
Adrian had wanted to name him Harold Charles Bennett.
A name inherited from men who had arranged his existence.
Sophia kissed the baby’s forehead.
“His name is Noah Hale.”
The words felt like freedom.
Not Bennett.
Hale.
Her father’s name.
Her mother’s chosen name.
The baby cried again.
Police lights appeared on the far shore.
Rescue teams had reached the lake.
Sophia looked toward Thomas.
His pulse was fading.
“Dad, stay with me.”
His eyes opened slightly.
“You named him?”
“Noah.”
Thomas smiled weakly.
“Anna would love that.”
Then his eyes closed again.
The rescue boat reached them.
Medics took Thomas and Eleanor first.
Sophia refused to release Noah until a neonatal doctor promised she could remain beside him.

As they reached shore, Gabriel looked back at the burning remains of Marcus’s boat.
No body surfaced.
