Chapter 10 - The Perfect Heir

Harold Bennett’s recorded image looked directly into the camera.
His face was lined with age, but his eyes remained sharp.
“For generations, the Bennett family weakened itself through marriage to outsiders,” he said. “Wealth was diluted. Loyalty was divided. The Legacy Trust corrected that failure.”
Photographs appeared behind him.
Children moved between schools, foster homes, and adoptive families.
Hidden daughters of the Bennett bloodline had been placed beyond the family, raised under different names, then guided back toward selected male descendants.
Sophia’s mother had been one of them.
Her meeting with Adrian had not been chance.
It had been the culmination of a plan created decades earlier.
Harold continued.
“Sophia Hale carries the maternal line of Eleanor Bennett and the paternal line of Charles Bennett through their hidden daughter, Anna. Adrian Bennett carries the recognized line. Their male child will unite every surviving claim.”
Sophia could barely remain standing.
Her son had been designed.
Not conceived through fate or love.
Designed.
The projector displayed genetic charts.
Medical histories.
Compatibility reports.
Files documenting Sophia from childhood.
Her school records.
Her university applications.
Her first job.
Photographs of her walking home.
“They watched me my entire life.”
Thomas held her shoulders.
“I tried to move us. They always found us.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I thought ignorance would protect you.”
The recording shifted.
“Should the marriage fail before the heir’s birth, the mother must be isolated, declared unstable, and removed from guardianship.”
Sophia looked at the custody documents.
Adrian believed he had created the plan.
In truth, he had been following instructions written long before he was born.
The screen showed another clause.
“If Adrian refuses his role, secondary pressure shall be applied through the Cross daughter.”
Vanessa.
She had also been positioned exactly where the trust wanted her.
Gabriel struck the projector.
The image flickered but continued.
“Destroying the machine won’t destroy the files,” Maya said.
Harold’s recording reached its final message.
“The Guardian will oversee the heir until he is prepared to lead.”
A list of possible guardians appeared.
Most names were crossed out.
The final line remained hidden behind an access code.
Sophia stepped toward the keyboard.
“What password?”
Thomas removed the dark stone from Anna’s pendant.
Beneath it was a tiny metal key.
He inserted it into the control panel.
The screen unlocked.
GUARDIAN DESIGNATION CONFIRMED.
A name appeared.
ELEANOR BENNETT.
Everyone turned toward her.
Eleanor stared at the screen.
“No.”
Julian’s voice broke.
“You’re the Guardian?”
“No.”
“Your name is there.”
“I never accepted.”
Charles looked at her.
“The trust believed you would raise Sophia’s child.”
Eleanor shook her head violently.
“My father asked me years ago. I refused.”
Gabriel pointed toward the file.
“Then why is the designation confirmed?”
“I don’t know.”
A slow clap echoed from the staircase.
Marcus Cross descended into the basement.
Two armed men followed him.
“You always were an ungrateful daughter, Eleanor.”
Charles stepped in front of her.
“How did you find us?”
Marcus smiled.
“This property belongs to the trust.”
Vanessa’s description returned to Sophia.
A masked man.
A scar across his right hand.
A black stone ring engraved with H.
Marcus lifted his right hand.
A pale scar crossed the skin.
On his finger rested the ring.
“You are the Guardian,” Sophia said.
Marcus bowed slightly.
“Acting Guardian. Eleanor was meant to inherit the role, but she lacked conviction.”
Gabriel moved toward him.
“You stole Vanessa from the hospital.”
“I rescued her from irrelevance.”
“You raised her to manipulate Adrian.”
“I raised her to serve the family.”
“She is your daughter.”
“She is an asset.”
Gabriel lunged.
One armed man struck him with the butt of a pistol.
Gabriel fell.
Sophia stepped forward despite Maya’s attempt to hold her back.
“You altered my medical records.”
Marcus smiled.
“I corrected the schedule.”
“You could have killed my son.”
“The strongest children survive.”
Thomas moved toward him.
“You stay away from her.”
Marcus aimed a gun at Thomas.
Sophia froze.
Marcus looked at the projector.
“The heir belongs to the trust. Sophia will deliver him tonight.”
“I’m not in labor.”
“You will be.”
One of the armed men opened a medical case.
Inside were syringes and surgical instruments.
Maya whispered, “Sophia, run.”
The basement door slammed shut above them.
Marcus pointed toward a steel operating table hidden behind a curtain.
“This house has delivered Bennett children for three generations.”
Sophia felt the baby kick.
She placed one hand over him.
Marcus nodded to his men.
“Prepare her.”
Eleanor stepped into their path.
“No.”
Marcus laughed.
“You refused once. Do you plan to fail the family again?”
“I did not fail the family.”
Eleanor removed a small device from her pocket.
“I failed my daughters.”
She pressed the button.
An explosion shook the house.
The basement lights died.
Smoke poured through the ceiling.
Thomas pulled Sophia toward a side passage.
Gunshots erupted behind them.
They ran through a narrow tunnel leading beneath the house.
Sophia’s abdomen tightened.
A contraction.
Then another.
Maya checked her pulse while they moved.
“The drug from the hospital may still be affecting you.”
Behind them, Marcus shouted orders.
The tunnel ended at the lakeshore.
Rain struck Sophia’s face.
A boat waited beside the dock.
Julian helped her aboard.
Gabriel emerged from the tunnel carrying Eleanor.
Blood covered her side.
Charles followed.
Thomas untied the boat.
As they pushed away, flames rose from the old house.
Marcus appeared on the dock.
He aimed his pistol.
A shot crossed the water.
Thomas jerked.
He fell against Sophia.
“Dad!”
Blood spread across his shirt.
The boat moved into the darkness while Sophia held him.
Thomas placed the pendant in her hand.
“Your mother wanted you free.”
His eyes closed.
Sophia screamed his name.
Then the strongest contraction yet tore through her body.
May you like
Maya looked down.
“Sophia, the baby is coming.”
