Chapter 8 - Emily’s Final Testimony
The investigation lasted four months.
During that time, the girls lived with Charles.
His quiet house changed overnight.
Backpacks appeared near the front door. Cereal boxes filled the kitchen. April placed stuffed animals on every chair. Rachel began playing Emily’s old piano in the evenings.
Lucy rarely slept through the night.
She worried that Arthur would return.
Charles installed new locks, security cameras, and lights around the property. He also attended every meeting with Helen Ward and Detective Morales.
Emily’s records revealed more than anyone expected.
Arthur had stolen nearly four hundred thousand dollars from family accounts over three years.
He had used part of the money to pay for hotel rooms, jewelry, international travel, and the planned wedding with Vanessa.
He had also borrowed money against the family home by forging Emily’s signature.
The placement forms were fraudulent.
The insurance amendment was fraudulent.
Arthur had even created false medical records suggesting Emily suffered from severe emotional instability. He intended to use them if she filed for divorce.
The records came from a clinic owned by one of his clients.
That discovery expanded the investigation.
Vanessa cooperated quickly after learning that Arthur had hidden additional money from her. She admitted helping him create the consulting company used to conceal the transfers.
She also revealed that Arthur had promised to send the girls into foster care long before Emily’s accident.
“He said children would interfere with our life,” Vanessa told investigators. “He said Charles would die soon and no one else would fight for them.”
Charles read the statement three times.
At the custody hearing, Arthur appeared by video from the county detention center.
He had lost weight. His polished appearance was gone.
His attorney argued that Charles was too old to raise three children and requested that Arthur retain parental rights until the criminal case was resolved.
Helen placed Emily’s final recorded statement before the judge.
Emily had made the recording in her attorney’s office two days before her death.
“My name is Emily Bennett. I am making this statement because I believe my husband intends to abandon our children if he gains full control of our finances.
“My father, Charles Bennett, has been a constant presence in their lives. He has cared for them during school breaks, illnesses, and every difficult moment. If I am unable to protect them, I want him to become their guardian.
“I am not afraid that Arthur will miss me.
“I am afraid that he will treat my death as an opportunity.”
The courtroom remained silent after the recording ended.
The judge granted Charles permanent guardianship.
Arthur’s parental authority was suspended pending the criminal case.
Outside the courthouse, reporters waited on the steps.
Charles did not speak to them.
Lucy did.
She stood beside her grandfather, wearing Emily’s silver bracelet.
“My mother was not confused,” she said. “She was not weak. She knew the truth, and she made sure we would be safe.”
That evening, Charles took the girls to their favorite restaurant.
April ordered chocolate cake before dinner.
Rachel laughed for the first time since the funeral.
Lucy looked at the guardianship document resting beside Charles.
“Can Dad take us back someday?”
Charles answered honestly.
“He can ask the court. But he cannot simply take you. You have a lawyer, a judge, and me standing between you and anyone who wants to hurt you.”
“What if you get sick?”
“Then we make another plan together. No one will hide the truth from you again.”
