Chapter 3 - Emily’s Last Promise

Three weeks before the accident, Emily had visited Charles without Arthur or the girls.

It had been a Tuesday afternoon. Charles was repairing a cabinet in his workshop when Emily appeared at the door holding two coffees.

She looked exhausted.

Charles noticed faint shadows beneath her eyes and asked if she was ill.

Emily shook her head.

“I need to ask you something.”

They sat at the old wooden table where she had once completed her schoolwork.

“If something happened to me,” she began, “would you take care of the girls?”

Charles immediately put down his coffee.

“What is happening?”

“Nothing has happened yet.”

“That is not an answer.”

Emily stared at her hands.

She admitted that Arthur had been controlling the family finances for years. She had recently discovered withdrawals from the education accounts Charles had created for Lucy, Rachel, and April.

At first, Arthur claimed the bank had made an error.

Then Emily found payments to hotels, jewelry stores, and a wedding planner.

“A wedding planner?” Charles asked.

Emily nodded.

“There is another woman.”

“Leave him.”

“I’m trying.”

“You and the girls can stay here tonight.”

Emily looked toward the window.

“It is not that simple. Arthur has moved money into accounts I cannot access. He forged my signature on a loan. He told me that if I accused him publicly, he would claim I was unstable.”

Charles felt anger rise through him.

“We go to the police.”

“I need proof first.”

“You have bank statements.”

“He says I authorized the transfers. Most of our accounts are shared.”

Charles reached for her hand.

“Emily, you do not have to fight him alone.”

She smiled sadly.

“I know. That is why I came.”

She explained that she had started recording conversations with Arthur. She kept notes of every suspicious payment, every threat, and every document he pressured her to sign.

She had also contacted a family attorney named Helen Ward.

“The girls cannot know everything,” Emily said. “But Lucy knows enough.”

“She is a child.”

“She is also observant. Arthur searches my things. He does not search hers.”

Charles stood.

“I do not like where this is going.”

“Neither do I.”

Emily removed a sealed envelope from her handbag.

“I’m going to keep this somewhere Arthur will not find it.”

“Give it to me.”

“Not yet. If I give it to you now, he may notice I visited. He checks my location and calls whenever I am away too long.”

Charles stared at his daughter.

The reality of her marriage became painfully clear.

“Come home,” he said. “Right now.”

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“I need three more days. Helen is preparing emergency custody papers. I need to move the girls without giving Arthur time to empty the remaining accounts.”

Charles wanted to refuse.

He wanted to drive to Emily’s house, collect his granddaughters, and stand between them and Arthur forever.

But Emily asked him to trust her.

Before leaving, she hugged him tightly.

“If anything happens, believe Lucy.”

Charles pulled back.

“Why Lucy?”

“Because I gave her instructions.”

“What instructions?”

Emily glanced at the clock.

“I promise I will explain everything this weekend.”

That weekend never came.

After Emily’s death, Charles tortured himself by remembering every word of that conversation.

He should have stopped her from leaving.

He should have followed her home.

He should have called the police that same afternoon.

But beneath the guilt was one clear instruction.

Believe Lucy.
