THE ENVELOPE HE LEFT BEHIND / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5 - the daughter who chose the lie)

Margaret was furious after Vanessa left.

Not at Vanessa.

At Robert.

"You embarrassed her."

Robert stood at the kitchen sink with both hands pressed against the counter.

"She lied to me."

"About what?"

"Gavin Pike."

"Who is he?"

Robert turned off the faucet.

"I don't want to discuss it tonight."

Margaret laughed sharply.

"You humiliated our daughter in my living room, and now you don't want to discuss it?"

"Our living room."

"What?"

"You said my living room."

Margaret stared at him.

Robert regretted the correction immediately.

He was tired.

She was hurt.

Neither of them was arguing about pronouns.

Margaret folded her arms.

"Tell me what's happening."

Robert wanted to.

Every instinct told him to place the documents in front of her.

But he knew Margaret.

She would call Vanessa.

Vanessa would cry.

Daniel would explain.

Margaret would demand a family meeting.

The moment Daniel realized Robert had proof, evidence could disappear.

Accounts could be moved.

Gavin could vanish.

So Robert said, "I need a few days."

Margaret's expression changed.

"You don't trust me?"

"I trust you more than anyone alive."

"Then tell me."

"I can't yet."

She walked away.

That night they slept back-to-back for the first time in years.

Robert remained awake until four.

At sunrise, Margaret got out of bed without speaking.

Robert watched her leave.

He whispered, "I'm sorry."

She did not hear him.

Three days later, Vanessa returned alone.

Robert was in the garage.

She closed the door behind her.

"Dad."

He looked up from the workbench.

"What?"

"Can we talk?"

"We're talking."

Vanessa stepped closer.

"I'm sorry I lied."

Robert set down a screwdriver.

"About Gavin?"

She nodded.

"What is he doing for you?"

"Helping restructure Daniel's debt."

"By forging my signature?"

Vanessa froze.

There it was.

Robert saw the truth before she answered.

"Dad, I can explain."

He laughed once.

"That sentence has buried more people than cancer."

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"It wasn't supposed to hurt you."

"You put my house up as collateral."

"Daniel said we'd replace it before you ever knew."

"You tried to change my life-insurance beneficiary."

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Robert stared at her.

"How did Daniel explain that one?"

Vanessa began crying.

"He said if something happened to you, Mom would give us the money anyway."

"So you decided to remove the inconvenience of asking her."

"No."

"Then what?"

Vanessa lowered her hands.

"We were desperate."

Robert stepped closer.

"And your desperation gave you ownership of my death?"

She shook her head.

"You don't understand what he's dealing with."

"Daniel?"

"The company. The investors. Lawsuits. People could lose jobs."

"Then Daniel should have closed the company."

"He couldn't."

"Why?"

"Because we would lose the house."

"His house."

"Ours."

"Not mine."

Vanessa flinched.

Robert pointed toward the door.

"You're going to tell Margaret."

Vanessa looked terrified.

"No."

"Today."

"Dad, she'll never forgive me."

"That is a consequence."

"You can't do this."

"I can."

Vanessa's face changed.

The tears stopped.

"You think you're perfect?"

Robert stared at her.

"No."

"You built that business while Mom raised me alone half the time."

"I know."

"You missed birthdays."

"I know."

"You bought things instead of showing up."

"I know."

"You taught me money fixes problems."

Robert absorbed each accusation.

Some were true.

That made the manipulation more painful.

He nodded.

"I failed you in ways I can't repair."

Vanessa's expression softened slightly.

Then Robert said, "But I did not teach you to forge my signature."

Her jaw tightened.

"I need time."

"You have until Sunday."

"Then what?"

"I tell her."

Vanessa stared at him.

"Daniel will blame me."

"He should blame himself."

"You don't know him when he's scared."

Robert heard something underneath the sentence.

"Has he hurt you?"

Vanessa looked away.

"Vanessa."

"No."

Robert did not believe her.

But before he could ask again, the garage door opened.

Daniel stood there.

Neither of them had heard him arrive.

"Everything okay?"

Vanessa immediately stepped away from her father.

Robert watched her posture change.

That told him more than her answer had.

Daniel smiled.

"Vanessa?"

"We're fine."

Robert looked at his daughter.

Sunday, he mouthed.

She looked away.

Daniel saw the exchange.

On Saturday night, Robert received a photograph from Marcus Bell.

It showed Daniel meeting Gavin Pike behind a restaurant.

A second image showed money changing hands.

A third showed Gavin handing Daniel a small flash drive.

Marcus called.

"We got the drive's serial number from a zoomed image. I can't tell you what's on it."

Robert studied the photograph.

"What do you think?"

"I think Pike is keeping records."

"For protection?"

"Men like him always do."

Robert looked at Daniel's face in the photograph.

"What would it take to make Pike cooperate?"

"Pressure."

"From whom?"

"Someone with more leverage than Daniel."

Robert thought about the forged beneficiary request.

The mortgage.

The money transfers.

Then he thought about his daughter standing in the garage and saying, You don't know him when he's scared.

Robert made a decision.

"Arrange a meeting."

"With Pike?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

"Somewhere public."

Marcus hesitated.

"Robert, you're sick."

"I noticed."

"Let me handle it."

"No."

"Why?"

May you like

Robert looked at Vanessa's photograph.

"Because I need to know whether my daughter is a thief, a victim or both."
