THE ENVELOPE AT THE ALTAR / Chapter 3 / 15

Chapter 3 - The Envelope

Nora did not understand why everyone was staring at David.

She knew he was a veteran.

Julian had introduced them once.

But she had never understood why Julian respected him so deeply.

David had never spoken much.

He carried himself like someone who had spent decades learning when silence was more powerful than words.

Now he stood in the middle of Nora's wedding.

And he was holding a sealed envelope.

Nora looked at Julian.

Did you know about this?

Julian hesitated.

Not like this.

Charles stood.

You are trespassing.

David ignored him.

He walked toward Nora.

Nora's eyes stayed on the envelope.

What is that?

Something that belongs to you.

Charles's voice sharpened.

Give it to me.

David finally looked at him.

It was addressed to Nora.

You have no authority over it.

Charles stepped forward.

Everything in this chapel belongs to me.

David smiled faintly.

That is what you have always believed.

The veterans shifted into two lines.

Nora looked at them.

Why are they here?

David answered.

Because some debts cannot be buried.

Julian closed his eyes.

Nora turned toward him.

Julian.

He stepped closer.

I wanted to tell you.

Then tell me.

Julian looked at Charles.

Your father knows.

Knows what?

Charles shouted.

Enough.

Nora flinched.

The word echoed through the chapel.

Julian reached for her hand.

Charles pointed at him.

You have manipulated my daughter long enough.

Julian's expression hardened.

I have never manipulated her.

You lied to her.

Julian looked at Nora.

Yes.

Nora's face fell.

About what?

Before he could answer, David interrupted.

About the night your father disappeared.

Nora froze.

My father disappeared?

Charles's face changed.

David continued.

Not your father.

Your father's partner.

Nora stared at him.

What partner?

David looked at Charles.

Tell her.

Charles said nothing.

David looked back at Nora.

Your father was not always the man you know.

He was once part of a company that handled government contracts.

Nora frowned.

I know about Montgomery Holdings.

You know the public version.

David lifted the envelope.

This contains the other one.

Nora's hand moved toward it.

Charles stepped forward.

Do not open that.

Nora stopped.

She looked at him.

Why?

Because you will destroy this family.

Nora's eyes filled with tears.

Maybe it was already destroyed.

She took the envelope.

David released it.

Then a sound came from the chapel entrance.

Everyone turned.

A man stood in the doorway.

Older.

Pale.

His face was thinner than Nora remembered.

But she knew him.

She had seen photographs of him throughout her childhood.

Her father's former business partner.

A man whose funeral she had attended when she was nine.

Nora whispered his name.

Daniel Bell.

David's father.

The dead man.

He looked at Charles.

Charles staggered backward.

May you like

And Nora understood one terrible thing.

Someone had lied about a death.
