THE ENVELOPE AT THE ALTAR / Chapter 14 / 15

Chapter 14 - The Man Behind the Name

Nora returned to the chapel.

Not alone.

Julian followed.

David followed them.

Daniel and Evelyn stayed at the house with the remaining veterans.

The chapel was empty.

The sunlight had disappeared.

Only a few candles remained.

Charles stood at the altar.

He looked older.

Tired.

For the first time, Nora did not see the powerful businessman.

She saw a frightened man.

You came.

Nora walked toward him.

Tell me the truth.

Charles looked at Julian.

You brought him.

He is my husband.

Charles laughed bitterly.

That is what I was afraid of.

Nora stopped.

What did you do to Robert?

Charles looked at the altar.

I tried to save him.

From whom?

Charles remained silent.

Nora's voice hardened.

You lied to me.

Yes.

You lied about Eleanor.

Yes.

You lied about Daniel.

Yes.

You lied about Julian.

Charles closed his eyes.

Yes.

Then tell me what is true.

Charles finally looked at her.

I loved your mother.

Nora frowned.

I know.

No.

You don't.

Charles took a breath.

Your mother knew about the program.

She wanted to expose it.

I tried to stop her.

Why?

Because I knew what would happen.

What?

People would die.

Nora looked at Julian.

And Robert?

Charles whispered.

Robert discovered the person who funded everything.

Who?

Charles hesitated.

Then the chapel doors opened.

A man entered.

Senator Richard Hale.

Nora froze.

Hale smiled.

Charles looked terrified.

You should not have come here.

Hale ignored him.

He looked at Nora.

Your father has always been a terrible liar.

Charles stepped forward.

Stay away from my daughter.

Hale laughed.

Your daughter?

After everything you did?

Nora stared at him.

What do you want?

Hale answered.

The same thing I have wanted for twenty years.

The archive.

Nora shook her head.

You already have it.

No.

Hale looked at Julian.

He has it.

Julian's expression changed.

What?

Hale smiled.

You never knew what your father left inside you.

Nora looked at Julian.

Hale continued.

Robert Vance didn't hide the evidence in a building.

He hid it in his son.

Julian went still.

What does that mean?

Hale stepped closer.

The answer is in your memory.

Julian shook his head.

I don't remember anything.

Hale smiled.

You will.

He raised his hand.

The chapel doors slammed shut.

Then every light turned red.

David reached for his weapon.

Hale looked at him.

Still protecting them, David?

David stared.

You were the one.

Hale smiled.

May you like

Finally.

Someone remembered.
