THE DOSE HE STOLE / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15 - The Silver Watch

Six weeks after Daniel’s arrest, Lily returned to school.

Emily walked her to the entrance and watched until she disappeared through the blue doors with her backpack bouncing against her shoulders.

It was a victory so ordinary that it nearly made Emily cry.

That afternoon, the district attorney informed her that Daniel would remain in custody while the medical fraud case moved forward. Charles Vale had been charged separately. Meridian Patient Relief’s accounts were frozen, and more than $4.8 million had been recovered for affected families.

The main scheme was collapsing.

Vanessa agreed to testify in exchange for reduced charges. She moved out of the Carter apartment and surrendered the remaining payment.

“I don’t expect forgiveness,” she told Emily.

“Good,” Emily replied. “Start with honesty.”

Carter Development’s board returned control of Emily’s voting shares. She refused the chief executive position and appointed an independent management team while auditors reviewed every contract Daniel had approved.

She also created a patient-protection fund in Lily’s name.

No parent would ever again be told that a computer record mattered more than the medication missing from a child’s case.

It was not a perfect ending.

But it was a beginning that belonged to Emily.

Dr. Bennett continued treating Lily under supervision while the hospital reviewed his compromised credentials. No evidence proved he had taken medication, but no evidence explained why Elaine had mentioned him in the video.

He accepted every restriction without complaint.

That made Emily trust him slightly more.

It also made her remain careful.

One rainy evening, Emily and Lily returned home to find a small package outside the apartment door.

There was no courier label.

No return address.

Inside was the red scarf found at the hospital.

The evidence seal had been cut.

Emily immediately called Detective Hale.

“Don’t touch anything else,” he said. “Officers are coming.”

Lily stood behind her.

“Is it Grandma’s?”

“Yes.”

“Was she the scarf lady?”

“I don’t know.”

A folded note rested beneath the fabric.

Emily used gloves to open it.

The handwriting belonged to Elaine.

Emily,

Daniel was never the person your father feared most.

He was greedy, predictable and easy to direct.

Charles built Meridian, but he did not choose the patients.

The original buyer still has access to St. Catherine.

Do not let Lily return to the ICU.

Do not trust anyone wearing the silver watch.

Emily read the final sentence twice.

Dr. Bennett wore a silver St. Catherine Foundation watch.

So did every senior member of the foundation board.

Her phone rang.

The screen displayed Dr. Bennett’s name.

Emily did not answer.

A voicemail appeared seconds later.

“Emily, listen carefully. Someone accessed Lily’s hospital account ten minutes ago. They scheduled a new treatment under an emergency authorization.”

Emily’s heart began to pound.

Lily was not scheduled for any treatment.

Dr. Bennett continued.

“The authorization carries my signature, but I didn’t create it. The appointment is for tonight.”

Emily looked at Lily.

“Mom?”

The building lights went out.

The hallway became completely dark.

Emily pulled Lily behind her and locked the door.

From the other side came three slow knocks.

A woman’s voice spoke through the wood.

“Little Comet, open the door.”

Lily gripped Emily’s hand.

“That’s not Grandma.”

The voice outside changed.

Lower now.

Colder.

“Emily, your mother has something that belongs to us.”

Detective Hale’s officers had not arrived.

Emily checked her phone.

No signal.

The person outside knocked again.

Then a photograph slid beneath the door.

It showed Elaine and Owen Pike sitting inside an unfamiliar hospital room.

Both were alive.

Between them stood a figure wearing a white medical coat.

Only one hand was visible.

Around the wrist was a silver watch.

Written across the bottom of the photograph were seven words:

BRING LILY, OR THEY RECEIVE THE FINAL DOSE.

Emily turned the photograph over.

On the back was an address and a time.

St. Catherine Medical Center.

Midnight.

Room 0714.

Then the elevator at the end of the dark hallway opened.

Someone stepped out.

And began walking toward their door.
