Chapter 12 - The Sealed Amendment
Charles Vale arrived at the hospital an hour after the hearing.
He carried a leather briefcase and wore the same gray suit he had worn at Emily’s father’s funeral.
Detective Hale met him in the conference room.
Emily, Vanessa and Mira sat across from him.
“Why didn’t you tell me my mother was the replacement trustee?” Emily asked.
Charles placed the briefcase on the table.
“Because the amendment was sealed.”
“You filed it.”
“I witnessed it.”
“Did my father sign it?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Six months before his death.”
“Was Daniel present?”
“No.”
“Then how did Daniel know enough to reactivate my mother’s foundation credential?”
Charles’s expression remained neutral.
“I did not know he had.”
“You processed the reactivation.”
“I processed paperwork that appeared to come from Elaine.”
“Did you speak to her?”
“No.”
“Then you never confirmed she was alive.”
Charles looked at Detective Hale.
“Is this an interrogation?”
“It can become one,” Hale replied.
Mira placed the foundation access report on the table.
“Your office computer approved the fraudulent medical account.”
“My assistant may have processed it.”
“Your assistant was on maternity leave.”
Charles’s calm expression finally shifted.
“Then someone accessed the system.”
“From Carter Development,” Emily said. “Using my old computer.”
Charles looked genuinely unsettled.
“That computer should have been destroyed.”
Emily leaned forward.
“Why?”
He did not answer.
“Why should it have been destroyed?”
Charles opened the briefcase and removed a sealed envelope.
“Your father discovered unauthorized access to the family reserve shortly before his death. He believed someone inside Carter Development had copied your digital identity.”
“Daniel.”
“Your father suspected him.”
“You told me Dad trusted Daniel.”
“I told you what was necessary to prevent Daniel from moving immediately against the estate.”
Emily stared at him.
“You let him control the company.”
“Only the visible operations.”
“He controlled enough to steal from Lily.”
Charles’s face tightened.
“That was never supposed to happen.”
“What was supposed to happen?”
“He was supposed to believe he had won.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“You used all of us.”
“Richard designed a trap,” Charles replied. “The sealed amendment placed final trust authority with Elaine. Any attempt to access the medical reserve using Emily’s credentials would activate an internal audit.”
Mira looked at him.
“No audit was activated.”
“Yes, it was.”
“Then where is it?”
Charles looked toward the sealed envelope.
“Your systems never received the alert because the audit was routed outside the hospital.”
“To whom?” Hale asked.
Charles placed the envelope in front of Emily.
“Elaine.”
Emily did not touch it.
“You know where she is.”
“I know where she was supposed to be.”
“Stop speaking in riddles.”
Charles lowered his voice.
“Your mother did not abandon you.”
Emily felt every sound in the room disappear.
“Then where has she been?”
“Protecting evidence.”
“From Daniel?”
“From everyone connected to Meridian.”
“Why didn’t she contact me?”
“Because Richard believed your phone, home and company accounts were compromised. He asked Elaine to disappear until Daniel exposed the full network.”
Emily stood so quickly that her chair struck the wall.
“My daughter nearly died.”
“I know.”
“You all watched Daniel move money and manipulate records because you wanted him to expose someone?”
“We did not know he would target Lily’s medication.”
“You knew he was using medical accounts.”
“We knew money was moving. We did not know physical treatments were being diverted.”
“That distinction means nothing to the families whose children were placed at risk.”
Charles looked down.
“No. It doesn’t.”
Detective Hale picked up the sealed envelope.
“Is Elaine alive?”
Charles hesitated too long.
“Mr. Vale.”
“The last confirmed contact was four days ago.”
“What happened?”
“She sent a message stating that Meridian had discovered her location.”
Emily gripped the table.
“Where?”
“An old Carter property outside Millbrook.”
“Have you sent anyone?”
“I sent private security.”
“And?”
“They found the property empty.”
Emily looked at the red scarf photograph.
“Was she at the hospital?”
“I don’t know.”
“She knew Lily was here.”
“She may have come to warn you.”
“Then why disguise herself?”
“Because someone else was watching.”
Hale opened the sealed envelope after Charles granted permission.
Inside was a handwritten letter from Richard Carter.
Emily recognized her father’s writing immediately.
Emily,
If you are reading this, Daniel has reached the medical reserve.
Do not trust the records carrying your name.
Do not trust the person who appears most helpful.
Find the original patient ledger before Meridian finds Lily.
The final sentence had been underlined twice.
Emily looked toward Dr. Bennett through the conference-room window.

On his wrist, the silver foundation watch caught the light.
