Chapter 9 - the consequences grant could not buy
Grant eventually pleaded guilty to financial fraud and falsifying corporate documents.
His attorneys negotiated an agreement that spared him the longest possible sentence, but money could not erase the consequences.
He was required to repay millions of dollars.
He was permanently barred from serving as an officer in the Bennett Crown Hotel Group.
Several personal properties were sold, including the mansion where Claire and Whitney had grown up.
For Grant, losing authority was worse than losing wealth.
He wrote Claire repeatedly.
The first letters blamed Richard.
The next blamed the board.
Then he blamed stress, the economy and Margaret’s death.
Claire returned them unopened.
Nearly a year passed before a different letter arrived.
There were no excuses inside.
Grant admitted he had resented Margaret’s control of the company. After her death, he had convinced himself that he deserved everything she owned.
He admitted favoring Whitney because she admired him without questioning his choices.
Claire had reminded him too much of Margaret.
Every time Claire asked for transparency, Grant heard Margaret challenging him again.
I punished you for possessing the courage I lacked, he wrote.
Claire read the sentence several times.
The apology did not restore what he had taken.
It did not erase the childhood celebrations he missed, the insults after her divorce or the hospital call he ended.
But it gave Claire something she had once believed she needed.
Proof that she had not imagined the cruelty.
Grant had known what he was doing.
Claire wrote one response.
I accept that you have finally told the truth.
I do not accept you back into my life.
Noah will not grow up believing love must be purchased with obedience.
I hope you use the rest of your life to become someone who would have opened that hospital door.
She sent the letter without including her address.
Whitney’s consequences were different.
Because she cooperated and had not personally forged the documents, she avoided criminal charges. However, she was required to repay improperly received funds and surrender her claim to several disputed assets.
For the first time, she found a job without Grant arranging it.
She began working for a small beauty retailer as an assistant buyer.
There were no photographers, personal drivers or private launch events.
Claire heard about Whitney’s progress through Richard but did not reach out.
Trust would not be rebuilt through promises.
It would be rebuilt, if ever, through years of changed behavior.
Claire was no longer waiting for either Grant or Whitney to become the family she deserved.
She already had a family.
