Chapter 6 - the boardroom without grant bennett

Three days later, Claire entered Bennett Crown headquarters with her arm still in a cast.

Richard walked beside her. Priya followed carrying the black folder.

Claire had visited the building many times as a child, but she had never entered the executive boardroom as an owner.

Grant sat at the far end of the long table.

Whitney was beside him.

Eight board members filled the remaining seats.

The emergency meeting began with a presentation from the forensic accounting team.

The evidence was worse than Richard first believed.

Grant had used Claire’s forged authorization to secure loans.

He had concealed losses from two hotel expansions.

He had transferred company money into Whitney’s business without board approval.

He had charged personal expenses to maintenance accounts.

The cottage repair was one of dozens of neglected projects.

Employees had reported broken elevators, unsafe kitchen equipment and damaged fire doors. Funds approved for repairs had repeatedly been redirected toward marketing events that improved Grant and Whitney’s public image.

Claire thought of her mother’s words.

A company reveals its heart through the way it treats people who cannot help its reputation.

Grant had turned Margaret’s life work into the opposite of everything she valued.

When the evidence presentation ended, the board chair asked Grant whether he wished to respond.

Grant stood.

“I made difficult decisions during a period of expansion. Every action was intended to preserve this company.”

“You forged your daughter’s signature,” one board member said.

“Claire had always permitted me to manage her interests.”

“Not this time,” Richard replied.

Grant looked directly at Claire.

“You know nothing about running an international hotel group.”

Claire’s heart pounded.

A week earlier, those words might have silenced her.

Now she opened the file in front of her.

“I know the company spent seven million dollars promoting Whitney’s brand while delaying employee health-benefit payments.”

Grant’s face changed.

“I know three regional managers resigned after reporting safety problems. I know you called them disloyal. I know the company’s guest ratings have fallen for five consecutive quarters while executive entertainment expenses doubled.”

No one interrupted her.

“I also know my mother did not build this company so her husband could use it as a private bank.”

Grant struck the table with his palm.

“Your mother trusted me.”

Richard removed a sealed document.

“No, Grant. Margaret anticipated you.”

The document was a letter Margaret had written shortly before her death.

It instructed the board to suspend Grant immediately if he ever used either daughter’s shares without documented consent.

Grant stared at the letter.

The board vote was unanimous.

He was removed as chief executive officer.

His access to company properties and accounts was revoked.

Claire was appointed interim representative of her mother’s trust, with Richard serving as temporary financial overseer.

Whitney’s cosmetics agreement was canceled.

The flagship store would not open.

The remaining business assets were placed under review.

Grant gathered his papers slowly.

As he reached the door, he turned to Claire.

“This company will destroy you.”

Claire met his eyes.

May you like

“No. It nearly destroyed me because I kept allowing you to define my place in it.”

Grant left without another word.
