Chapter 5 - The Hidden File
Richard entered the administrative wing using a temporary donor access card Sarah had obtained months earlier.
The corridor was nearly empty.
Most offices were closed for the night.
He found the records room and unlocked a cabinet containing archived billing files.
Inside Chloe Vale’s folder were the documents he had hidden there.
Transfer approvals.
False consulting invoices.
A handwritten list of accounts.
Richard placed everything inside his coat.
Then he noticed a small envelope taped behind the folder.
On the front, Dr. Levin had written:
COPY SECURED.
Richard tore the envelope open.
It was empty.
Dr. Levin already had the evidence.
Richard called Sarah.
“The papers are compromised.”
“What does that mean?”
“They made copies.”
“What about the bear?”
“Get it tonight.”
Sarah looked through the glass panel of Chloe’s room.
Arthur was sitting beside the bed.
A nurse had entered to prepare Chloe for the procedure.
Sarah knew she would not be able to take Barnaby without causing a scene.
“We wait,” she said.
“We don’t have time.”
“Arthur will go home eventually.”
“And if he listens to the recordings?”
Sarah looked at her brother through the glass.
“He won’t understand what he has until someone explains it.”
“You’re underestimating him.”
“No. I’ve spent my entire life watching Arthur believe the best in people. He won’t accept betrayal until it stands in front of him.”
Richard ended the call.
Sarah returned to the room and pretended she had found her phone in the visitor lounge.
Arthur watched her carefully.
“Where is Richard?” he asked.
“He went home.”
Chloe shook her head.
Arthur saw the movement.
“What is it?”
Chloe looked frightened.
“Richard was in the hallway.”
Sarah smiled.
“She’s tired.”
Arthur stepped toward Sarah.
“I think you should leave.”
“Arthur, don’t let stress turn you against your family.”
“My family is in that bed.”
The words struck harder than he intended.
Sarah’s eyes filled with anger.
For years, she had believed Arthur received everything she deserved.
Their parents had trusted him.
Friends had admired him.
Even after his wife died, people had gathered around him with sympathy and support.
Sarah had built her life through careful appearances, yet Arthur received loyalty without asking.
When the fundraiser began growing, resentment became opportunity.
At first, Sarah told herself she was borrowing money.
Richard’s investments had failed. Their home was heavily mortgaged. Their expensive lifestyle was collapsing.
They would take a small amount, recover their losses, and return it before anyone noticed.
But the first stolen transfer solved too many problems.
The second became easier.
Then Richard realized Chloe’s campaign could fund an entire new business venture.
Sarah convinced herself that Arthur would never need all the money.
The hospital procedure was mostly covered.
Donors had given more than necessary.
Why should strangers’ money remain unused while Sarah’s life fell apart?
She ignored the fact that rehabilitation, long-term care, and future procedures could cost far more than anyone expected.
She ignored the donor agreements.
She ignored Chloe.
Standing in the hospital room, Sarah saw Barnaby resting against Arthur’s chair.
For one reckless second, she considered taking the bear and running.
Then Detective Ortiz appeared at the end of the hallway.
Sarah recognized her from the fundraiser.
Ortiz approached the nurses’ station and spoke quietly to security.
Sarah understood immediately.
“Tell Chloe I love her,” she said.
Arthur stared at her.
