Chapter 3 - The Doctor Who Listened
Dr. Marcus Levin was not Chloe’s surgeon.
He was a pediatric cardiologist who had monitored her condition for nearly four years. He was patient, soft-spoken, and willing to explain complicated medical terms using drawings of trains, tunnels, and traffic lights.
Chloe trusted him.
Three days after Arthur confronted Richard, Chloe asked to speak with Dr. Levin alone.
Arthur was surprised but agreed.
“I’ll be right outside,” he told her.
Chloe waited until the examination room door closed.
Then she placed Barnaby on the table.
“I think my aunt stole my money,” she said.
Dr. Levin did not laugh.
He sat across from her.
“What makes you think that?”
“I heard her and Richard talking.”
“What did they say?”
“They said Daddy was too scared to look at the numbers. They said they could move the rest after my procedure.”
Dr. Levin’s expression became serious.
“Did they know you heard them?”
“No.”
“Did you tell your father?”
“I tried, but he gets sad when we talk about money. He thinks he hides it.”
Dr. Levin glanced at Barnaby.
“Why did you bring your bear?”
Chloe opened the patched ear and removed a tiny memory card.
“Because Barnaby remembers better than I do.”
She explained that Richard had given her an old digital recorder months earlier so she could record stories during hospital visits.
After overhearing the first conversation, Chloe began carrying the recorder inside Barnaby.
She had recorded Sarah and Richard several times.
Dr. Levin listened to one file through headphones.
His face changed.
The recording mentioned transferred donations, false invoices, and documents placed inside Chloe’s administrative hospital file.
“Where did you get this memory card?” he asked.
“Barnaby.”
“Does anyone else know?”
Chloe hesitated.
“I think Sarah saw me recording yesterday.”
Dr. Levin immediately copied the files.
He then contacted the hospital’s legal department and Detective Lena Ortiz, whose son had once been treated at St. Catherine’s.
Detective Ortiz arrived discreetly that afternoon.
Chloe repeated everything.
The detective praised her courage but made one thing clear.
“You are not responsible for catching anyone,” Ortiz said. “Your only job is to get better.”
“But what if they take the evidence?”
“We’ll protect it.”
“What about Daddy?”
“We’ll tell him when we know you’re safe.”
Chloe disliked keeping secrets from Arthur, but Dr. Levin explained that investigators needed time to confirm the recordings and trace the missing money.
Richard was financially experienced.
If he learned law enforcement was involved, he might destroy evidence or disappear.
Over the next week, investigators quietly uncovered a complicated scheme.
Richard had created a consulting company under a false business name. The fundraiser paid that company for services that had never been provided.
Sarah approved the invoices.
The money then moved through several accounts.
More than two hundred thousand dollars was gone.
The hidden hospital papers were not medical instructions.
They were copies of payment authorizations, donor agreements, and transfer records Richard had placed inside an old administrative file, planning to retrieve them later.
He believed the hospital was the safest hiding place because Arthur would never search through accounting documents while Chloe was receiving treatment.
The investigators prepared search warrants.
But before they could act, Sarah learned that Dr. Levin had requested copies of the fundraiser’s financial records.
She called Richard.
“The doctor knows,” she said.
“How much?”
“I don’t know.”
“Where are the papers?”
“Still inside the hospital file.”
“Then get them.”
“What about the recordings?”
