Chapter 9 - The Courtroom Truth
Three months later, Mia appeared in court.
She wore a plain navy dress instead of designer clothes. Her hair was pulled back, and she avoided looking at her parents.
Brent had accepted a plea agreement and agreed to testify. Investigators discovered that he had known some of the money was stolen, though Mia had controlled the accounts.
Mia’s attorney argued that she had made reckless decisions under financial pressure.
The prosecutor played a section of the livestream.
Mia’s own voice filled the courtroom.
“The funniest part is the grocery money. He sent eight hundred dollars, and she barely eats. Why waste it?”
Mia lowered her head.
Elena began to cry.
Daniel held her hand, but neither of them left.
When Elena was invited to speak, she walked to the front of the courtroom.
“My daughter did not strike me,” she said. “She did something quieter. She took away my phone, my money, my food, and then told me I could not trust my own mind.”
Mia finally looked at her.
Elena continued.
“I do not want revenge. I want accountability. I want her to understand that a person does not need to leave bruises to cause harm.”
Mia’s face crumpled.
The judge ordered restitution, probation after a period of confinement, financial counseling, community service with an elder-support organization, and mandatory therapy. Mia was forbidden from contacting Elena except through approved written communication.
The sentence was not the maximum possible punishment.
It was designed to make Mia face what she had done.
As officers prepared to escort her away, Mia spoke.
“Mom.”
Elena paused.
“I’m sorry.”
Elena studied her daughter’s face.

“I hope one day those words become true.”
Then she walked out beside Daniel.
